Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
When we get the hot weather in the summer I get maggots.I,ve tried everything last year and is starting again. I keep the upstairs under the sink garbage can sealed but get maggots in the outside can after awhile. I,ve cleaned the can, coated it with WD-40, tried vinegar, carb cleaner, put plastic over the top then the lid but still maggots. The only thing I can think of is the kitty litter,we have 2 cats. I even tried the pennys in water in a clear plastic bag and hung it over the can, but I think you need good sunlight for that. Any help?

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
Same problem here every summer. A few moth balls in the cans and problem solved.

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
That pennies in a bag is somebody's idea of a joke, IMO. I spray ant and roach poison into the bin. The flies go in, no flies come out.

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
We keep a ziplock bag with water in it over the garbage can and it seems to work. If I see maggots, I empty the garbage and spray Clorox in the can.
Maggots don't just appear on their own. Stop the flies ans you stop the maggots.

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
Interesting. Never had maggots in our garbage can (or anywhere else), but we don't have cats either. My daughter did several years ago but we didn't have maggots then either.
I pick up after the dogs at least once a day, then bag it & hang it behind the woodshed until I make a dump run.

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
I read the penny thing for flies on line and seems to be a Louisiana thing or whatever. The sun reflects the pennys and the flies think it is a spider. It must be true ,was on the the interweb

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
I actually know a guy that is a lawyer. I wouldn't call him a friend because lawyers have no friends.
I'm kidding. He's a good guy. And he dislikes lawyers as much as anyone. He has all the best lawyer jokes.

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
I guess you have to have flies in the house to get maggots in your trash. I see a fly I'm on it with the fly swatter. I've never noticed flies in my cans. I don't put meat containers or scraps in my kitchen can. Nothing that will get stinky during the week. They go directly out to the big curbside can. In the summer I do get flies in that can, but I've never noticed maggots. I have a one shot spray for flies I get at our local farm supply. I found out about it when I lived on a horse farm. For stables there is a dispenser that these canisters fit into that shoots a squirt out every few minutes. I just open the can lid and give a few shots, let the lid down. All flies die.
The can is as far from the house as possible, in the far RH corner of my property in front of my little barn. The barn has doors but the side shed is open. I get a mass of flies accumulated in both later in the summer. I assume they originate in the trash can, but flies tend to gather anywhere it is darker and cooler I've noticed. I hang fly strips and that gathers some up, but I'll just go in and squirt that stuff around as I back out. Knocks them all dead

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
They're just nature's little garbage disposals, doing their job. I have no problem with them, just Not In My Back Yard. Though it's a side yard, since I live in the 'burbs. Another good reason to have acreage.

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
Maggots are used in wounds. They eat only dead tissue which causes infection, and are believed to secrete enzymes that stop infections. No thanks

All true! But once the necrotic tissue is eaten, they have to be removed or they keep going.

Re: Ugh ,Maggots in garbage can
Had maggots in garbage cans once...meat scraps thrown out the day after garbage pickup, I can still smell it and gag to this day.
Now if there is scraps early in the week, or summer heat, we triple bag it and goes on the freezer or fridge until pickup day |
