If I knew any 70s around here id knock on the door and ask seems like all there is are 71s and 72s around here. Would the same rules apply to a suburban?

Thanks Jack...I appreciate that attitude. Yes, the rules apply to all Chevrolet "trucks" made at St. Louis during that time frame. The numbers should be sequential regardless of version (trucks, Blazers, Suburbans, etc.). So if you see one of those, please knock on a door for me.

Don't forget to look at spare driver's doors laying around too. While it (the blue sticker) alone does not provide sepecific model information it does have the year, plant and date in a MM/YY format.

Thanks Cordless, you didn't say it specifically, but I'm assuming it's a St.Louis build. It sure fits in surprisingly sequentially if it isn't. Adding it to our list.

...wouldn't it have been nice if the TC date was like Jan 5th...Mid-month keeps it all fuzzy...so, now we just have to come up with more serial numbers.

Re: Looking for 1970 St. Louis VINs for Chevy Trucks built Jan/Feb/Mar '70

Ok, guys got another number from the Blazer side with very nice documentation including Protecto Plate and ship date info... so just plugging it in...if 155XXX was assembled in March but before the 11th...and these are the numbers we have so far...

September 102XXX
October
November 122XXX
December 1389XX
January
February
March 155XXX, 157XXX

...and my truck was assembled after January 13th....

...and using Keith's logic and rough calculations below:

Quote:
Originally Posted by Keith Seymore View Post

I counted 45 working days between the period of September 15 and November 15, 1969 (not counting any overtime; I arbitrarily chose the middle of the month).

122,000 - 102,000 = 20,000, divided by the 45 days = 444 units per day.

As a sense check, 55.5 jobs per hour for an 8 hour day. That's a pretty good value as most of the truck plants ran, and still do run, around 60 jobs per hour. I do not know if St Louis was running one or two shifts of production at that time.

Now, even though that rate doesn't seem to hold true for the period from December 15 to March 15, I would propose we can build up from the December value of 138,900 at a rate of 444 units per day.

145,100 - 138,900 = 13 days, which would likely put the build in the mid January 1970 timeframe, assuming (again) no overtime and that the plant did not run during the time between Christmas and the New Year holiday.

Looking at it another way, 145,100 is about 1/3 of the way between 138,900 and 157,000. I count roughly 66 working days between those two values, so we could figure your truck was built approximately 22 days after 138,900. Assuming 138,900 was built on December 15 (arbitrarily) then I count 22 working days up to January 26, 1970, again assuming no overtime and that the plant did not run between Christmas and New Year.

K
...it still tracks OK for a late January 1970 assembly, but it's close. I checked the weather for Syracuse the week of January 13th (which was a Tuesday) and it was cold but no heavy precip. Of course I don't know how New Process shipped the transfer cases (train, truck or both) or if it would matter or how long it took to get it from Syracuse to St.Louis.....anyway...

Thanks for everyone's help, time and pics so far. We just need a few more numbers...especially February and January numbers. Keep your eyes peeled.

Too bad nobody has started an online registry for these trucks.

The data would be interesting and useful.

Camaros and Corvettes have one

I gotta ask the question...is your serial number 101XXX or actually 101000?... because those are two different things and one of them might be amazing.

PS...thanks for adding your number to the mix. Any other 70 StL's please chime in with your digits.
