Re: Looking for 1970 St. Louis VINs for Chevy Trucks built Jan/Feb/Mar '70

I have another 2wd Blazer tub that is pretty messed up and I looked at the VIN tag the other day and it's VIN is CE180S146997. I wish I had the original doors for it since it is so close to your VIN, but they were long gone before I found it.

I don't know how you would know for sure, but it is conceivable to me that they could have started at 101000. Does anyone have a lower numbered or August built 1970 model truck/Blazer?...if not....maybe you have the first 2wd Blazer built in St. Louis.

...Keith please chime in and tell me how I'm absurd to suggest he's got the first 2WD BLAZER OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!

Iron, it's just number 1000 to be assigned a build sequence number at St. Louis in the 1970 MY, and it happens to be a Blazer. 1970 MY build sequence numbers start at 100001, with the first number assigned, and go up from there.

I get that. My question is did they start at 101000 or 100000 at the beginning of the MY in St.Louis?

Iron, They started at 100001. The first truck built/assigned was number 100001, so his blazer is the 1000th truck/vehicle to be assigned a sequence number at St Louis in 1970 MY.

Yes, round numbers are cool, very cool. I have been checking numbers for you once a week. I haven't found anything that helps yet. But I did find a (0S) door sticker that was after 157xxx. 0S167532 5/70, No help, but sooner or later one of us will hit a number between 1389xx and 155xxx that will help. You have done a great job narrowing it down using your dash pad, gauge cluster, and transfer case. Have you checked the code on your rear axle. If original, it will have the month and day on it. Not definitive but it will add some info.

Would it be safe to assume 100011 would be the 11th truck built, on the very first day of production?

Thanks bruceman...I really appreciate that. Gosh this board is a helluva group of guys. My rear axle is the original 3.07 and was built on January 7th. Right in line with everything else...but in no way definitive....If it had been built in February, you might could call the ball...but it was built closer to St.Louis than the TC was....so could theoretically easily made it onto a January truck.

...kind of neat to think about trains coming from New York, New Hampshire and Michigan in late '69 and early '70 to build her. Pretty much the same thing UPS is doing for the old girl in '14 and '15.

Almost.

Keep in mind if there were other nameplates with separate VIN sequences inserted in there that would push it back a job or two (so maybe number 13 or 14, allowing for a couple GMCs in there).

Additionally, it might take a full day to build the first truck only, as production problems are ironed out or material issues overcome. Then the next day goes better, and you continue to ramp up as things smooth out.

Probably not on the first day, but no way to know for sure unless you were there. Definitely very early, though.

Yes, however production of early '71's was cut drastically by the last big UAW strike, 400,000 workers walked off the job in Sept and Oct '70.
