Is There a Non Sincro 1st gear 3 Spd in a 67/68

Does anyone have/had a 67 or a 68 3 speed with a non syncro first gear. I thought they were all syncro after 66 but I have read in trucks the base trans up to 68 was a CS10 Syncromesh 3 speed and the next option up the list was a CE10 FULLY SYNCRONIZED. GM's description and wording. In the 69 option list, the only 3 speed is the fully syncronized one. I am looking for the linkage from the column to the transmission for the NON syncro transmission in another thread and I need to know if they even made them. Thanks.

Re: Is There a Non Sincro 1st gear 3 Spd in a 67/68

I don't claim to be an expert on the subject but this is what I've experienced in 30+ years of hands on with these trucks. Never seen a 4 bolt side cover non synchro 1st column shift 3speed in any C series '66 and up, 6 or V8. I looked over at the GM heritage site for transmission lineup for '67. Shows what you found: base 6 cylinder 3 speed C10 uses a different ' synchromesh ' then all of the other C 10-30 series. The description of the three speeds available is very vague. They show a single picture to represent all of the three speeds available and it happens to be the older 4 bolt Muncie pictured (?!) Makes no sense at all (?)

I own a very typical almost zero option '67 C10 with the base 250 6cylinder and three speed on the column. My truck has the Warner (NOT a Saginaw NOT a 4 bolt Muncie) three speed column shift that I believe has an 8 bolt side cover and does not have a synchronized first gear. Everything about this truck looks completely original and unmolested. I'll try to get some pictures of this if I'm at the house this weekend.

Thanks for the come back Husker. Any way of getting a picture of your side cover on the transmission or at least seeing if it's got 4 bolts? Thanks.

IMO, the old non synchro should have been put out to pasture immediately after the new full synchro came out. GM kept the old non synchro on base 6 cylinder pickups through '68, used the newer full synchro on optional engines during '66, '67 and '68. Finally in '69, all engines used the full synchro.

That should be the 4 bolt side cover. It's always referred to as an M18 or with an overdrive, M19. Thanks!!

I have the synchro 7 bolt in it now with the 4.57 rear end. I bought a M19 overdrive transmission to let me go on the highway and have a little more fun driving it. Now I just have to get the linkage for it.

So that's what my C10 had (the M18). I drove my 67 for the first 4/5 years with the I-6 and 3spd, and man did it suck not having a syncro 1st gear. I guess it taught me to come to a complete stop at stop signs...

After driving 7/8/9/10/13/18 speed completely nonsynco transmissions for 30 something years, having only one is not a big problem. I miss the rev matching.

I have a friend who did that 5 speed swap. Now you know my next questions, Do you have the linkage for the 3 speed and if so, would you sell it and ship it? Thanks, Jeff

Re: Is There a Non Sincro 1st gear 3 Spd in a 67/68

This is the original three speed in my '67 250 6 cylinder C10. It is a 9 Bolt Side cover Warner T89. Only second and third gear are synchronized. This transmission was the optional heavy duty three speed for most Chevrolet trucks 1955 through,I believe, 1966. Wondering if Chevrolet may have used these on the base six cylinder C10 in 1967 in 1968 (??). Wondering if GM had a stockpile of these transmissions they needed to use up and just got rid of them on the base trucks for those two model years (??) This particular truck did not come with an SPID for me to cross just in case there is a possibility there was an option for this as a HD 3 speed upgrade as in '55- '66.
