Re: 57 Truck build

I started out brush and the went to spray with a $9 dollar HF gun. The trick is thin coats. I’m going to use the Blacktop again on the core support and brake booster.

Re: 57 Truck build

Sunday I started the tear down of the 4.8. Over all the engine looks good but 100k has made it a little dirty. I also found some light rust in the cylinders but nothing a hone wouldn’t take care of. Since I had Monday off I decided to drop it off to my friends machine shop to get freshened up. I’m just going to do new bearings, crank polish, HP cam, upgraded rod bolts, lS6 lifters, timing chain, clean and hone. The bottoms end will be taken care of. Heads will get cleaned, checked warp, lap and new ls6 springs. I also decided to service the trans and give it a new paint job. We’re slowly getting there!

I was going to just clean it myself, hone and lap the valves but after looking at it was real dirty. It came out of a company fleet truck. I just wanted to make sure that the bottom end was solid for my log show trips.

Re: 57 Truck build

I started back on the cab while the engine is at the machine shop. Today I removed the front firewall panels, bad front Upper windshield piece and POR 15 the inside. I dint like they way the front panels looked with a bow in them. I also cut the filler price for the inside panel. I got the old one out nw I’m trying to figure how to install the new front panel without removing the inner one. I guess I’ll cut it in half to get it in and weld it together once it’s in place. Any advice On the front upper pice is welcome.

Re: 57 Truck build

Truck is looking great!

When I replaced that panel I cut off about 1” of the overlap at one end. Started installing on the other side and then twisted the other side into place. I then finished with a small filler on the side I cut. It’s all covered by the seal so it doesn’t have to be pretty Can’t remember if I had the inner visor panel removed when I installed it.

Re: 57 Truck build

When I did mine I had to replace a similar length of the inside too. Made it easy.

Re: 57 Truck build

Started back on the upper windshield frame this morning. I cut about a 4in piece so I could get it all to fit back into place with the new piece. Overall it came out good. I think the hardest part was getting it welded. I had to flip the cab on the back to weld it without getting hit with sparks and slag. I still have to finish weld and grind the inner piece to get it smooth. I’m happy with the outcome.

Re: 57 Truck build

Got the engine back from the machine shop. Did a little refresh, ring, bearings and cam. Decided to keep the the vintage vibe and paint it all orange. I think it came out great! Just have to mate the engine and transmission. Now I’m debating on changing the intake and serpentine system. I’m looking at Holly intake and ICT serpentine system.

Re: 57 Truck build

Finally have the engine and transmission together and back in the frame. I only need a few more things and I need to buy and the engine update will be done. Then back on the cab again.

Re: 57 Truck build

I haven’t posted in a while. I have been doing a lot of grinding on the cab from all the metal work. So again not an exciting post. As always I find more rust that I have to repair. I also had a big dent in the roof that I managed to get out. Took me all day. I also started the mock up for the rear speakers, sub, amp and ECU mount. Thanks to Bigblock 73 for the speaker mounts. I also found some sweet ECU mounts. They are going to look great on the rear panel. I have the media blaster on for 1/30. Hopefully it doesn’t reveal anymore rust to fix. I also scored a great deal on a 60 gal compressor. Already hooked up and can’t wait to see what it does!

Re: 57 Truck build

Lookin good john, Gotta love new tools (air compressor)....If may offer a bit of advice with the media blaster... try to hit the big areas with a strip it disc, like the roof, fire wall, back of cab , it wont take that long to do and save you a bunch of aggravation with warping

Re: 57 Truck build

Went and had the truck blasted today. The wind was real bad today and blew the cab off the trailer. Luckily it just damaged the lower part of the cab. With a little hammer and Dolley I’ll have it back to normal. The cab came out good with a few of small rust spots to fix.

I am at that point to clean up the welds after finishing the mock up. Ho did the cab fair after blasting? Did it warp anything? You are a ways ahead of me so will follow this thread. Steve

Nothing warped. In fact the blasting helped on some warped spots. This blaster knew what he was doing. He told me areas that could warp and he took it easy. I’m ready to get my ac mocked up and fix some bad spots that came out after blasting then I should have it in epoxy. Then the mud work come in.

Thank You, I have a experienced blaster who does my work but never had body panels done. I used to do any of that myself but as I get older blasting is not as fun as it used to be plus the mess so having everything done off site.

Who's A/C system are you using? I want to prep my firewall for A/C before sending off to blast. I am going to use the vintage wireless kit right now. Steve

Going with Vintage air. I have a mock up box to get it in place before I order the kit. With the smooth dash I have to come up with a way to get the top mounted. I think I’m goin to use the French Cleat for the top rear so it will lock in place. I have to make some front mounts to connect it to the dash. The sure fit system won’t work for this now.
