Camaro tach with MSD 6AL issues

I installed a camaro tach I had purchased from a board member and had said he tested it and I trust them. Got it all into the gauge cluster, hooked up the ground to a good known ground, the tach to the tach outlet on the HEI, and the power to a 12V source. other parts were grounded properly and it's not in contact with the printed circuit as there are either the plastic grommets or electrical tape isolating it. However, no signal at all. There is a MSD 6AL box powering the tach. tried hooking the tach to that wire but no signal which I assumed since I think that's a digital signal. Any ideas?
