What hubcaps/wheel covers would have been original?

Mine is a 1972 stepside, basic truck (manual tranny, no A/C, AM radio, no cigarette lighter)...so what hubcaps would have been original?

Would the rims have been black or white?

Find Chevy trucks and click on the one for 1972. This will show you all the generic options and content that were available for the '72 model year. I think it has a representation of what the various hub caps were.

By the way, nice truck. I see you have the same custom gas cap as "the farm truck".

Check your SPID, glove box decal, if ordered new with optional chrome hubcaps or full wheel covers. If nothing is listed, your truck came with the standard base model painted hubcaps as shown on this '72 owned by joesjunk. They were all white, with black trim and blue bowtie. The indentical painted hubcap was used up until 1978 ( but bowtie painted gold 73-78). Starting in 1979, all hubcaps were made from light weight aluminum for fuel efficiency.

Thanks man. The "farm gas cap" is just a shop towel I stuffed in there since I have the gas tank out right now. I had the carb rebuilt and tank "renewed" and I plan on just replacing the entire fuel line also.

So these in this picture, are they "hubcaps" or "wheel covers?"

I just spoke with dad (original owner) and he is sure he HAS the originals! It will be next spring before we can get into his garage for a thorough search but if he has them, I want to go back to them.

Were the wheels originally white on base model (250 I6, 3 on column manual) trucks?

Actually there are very few base model factory photos available, I checked my stash. You know, simple business, greater profit margin when the vehicle was loaded with options. Here is a 2wd Blazer with the "base look".

That Blazer is highly unusual,and not the way it would have been built,from what I know. The CST option would have included chrome hubcaps.
Another little factoid correction,on C/K 10-30 series the painted steel hubcaps were used through '75. 1976 was the first year for the new design polished aluminum caps,which proved to be the last hubcaps offered by GM.

Your wheels would have been white and so were the hubcaps. These are hubcaps we're talking about,also called dog dish or poverty caps. Then,there are wheel covers I guess people refer to all as hubcaps,but that's inaccurate. They also say "full wheelcovers". It's just too dang simple for all that. Hubcaps cap the hub and wheel covers cover the wheel. All wheel covers are "full".

I agree the Blazer in photo is unusual, I suspect it was a publicity photo that was doctored. GM is famous for modifiying older photos to put into newer brochures. About the hubcaps, I respect your contributions and knowledge on this site, and from being from an era where you can remember these trucks when they were brand new. 1976 was in fact the first year of the new aluminum flat hubcap, but it was not used on base models till 1979. Earlier base models continued to use the carryover hubcap through 1978. Here is a brand new 1977 Custom Deluxe with the hubcap in question.
