New to me 72 Sub

I picked up this 72 in Bastrop, TX. It is rust free and in overall excellent shape. The bad rust is pictured in the RH rocker. It will be getting air ride and a super charged 6.0 with a 4l80e trans. I already have the appointment in October to get the drive line done. I have a month to get the rest completed.

I like the outside the way it is so I will focus my attention on the interior and suspension. Someone tried to wet sand the paint, but with some minor buffing it will have the perfect look for me.

I converted my 06 Suburban to a Duramax and my old drive line will be installed into the 72. I can't wait to get started, but I have to admit I know ZERO about bagged trucks, so this will be a learning experience for me. Any and all input on air ride is appreciated.

This is also a budget build. I have the 6.0/4l80E sitting on my shop floor that is long since paid for and I don't plan on spending big bucks for the air ride. I want to keep this simple and clean to start. Then add to it as I can afford things like Vintage Air.

I have been a member here for years under 00droptopSS, but since I haven't been around for a while I decided to start under a new member name.

I talked with the owner of 72 suburban at the Goodguys event in Des Moines Iowa back in july about airbags. I also wanted to bag my 72. His 72 was bagged and told me that there is not a kit designed for the suburban and he had to use a kit designed for a pickup. He is not happy with it at all. The ride is choppy. He sugested that I used drop spindles and springs too get the ride height and stance Im looking for. Good luck with the build. Looks like you found a winner to start with.

The 72 is better looking than than the 06, but I love the Duramax. The 6.0 with a blower cam head work and exhaust towed just as good as a diesel, but it got 9.0 mpg unloaded. Towing was around 7 mpg.

Now the the duramax I towed the 72 back from Texas and got 13.7 mpg at 75 to 80 mph.

I believe that guys use the Porterbuilt DropMember components to make the Suburban get on the ground. It might be choppy if the wrong components are used and the improper amount of air is in each bag...these are things that can be fixed by just building it right, with the right components. There are plenty of guys who have bagged their Burbans...surely they will chime in. My stepper is bagged, and I am looking forward to getting one of these to lay out as well.

I have been looking at the Porterbuilt kits and they seem to be cheaper than Ride Tech. What type of compressor and tank would be plug and play to go with the Porterbuilt suspension?

Also since I'm not looking to put the frame on the ground, what wheel and tire options do I have?

After doing some research on air suspension I have decided to use the Accuair e-level system. It is expensive, but appears to be easy to install.

I'm still looking at suspension systems. As of now I'm leaning toward the Porterbuilt products.

I'm still open to all input on the air suspension.

Congrats on getting the burb. I saw it in the local craigslist and on ebay. Was interested but I figured my wife would kill me if I brought another one home. I cant wait to see the build.

Did some buffing on the Burb this evening. I think the paint is going to polish up great and have a perfect patina.

Starting to order parts tomorrow. The five week lead time on the Porterbuilt suspension parts are an issue. I would go that direction if it was not for the lead time.

I'm going to mix and match some other parts for now and upgrade at a later date.

Point of advice for you. Im not slamming my burb, but I did build my own bagged suspension on my 69 C10 with a 6.0 and T56. The 4l80 will likely require the high hump tunnel. I used a stock center trailing arm crossmember since it "typically" works unless you try and lay frame. Well with the height of the T56 ouput shaft, it put the DS into the crossmember as you aired down. I should have gone aftermarket crossmember from the beginning. You will likely benefit from this with the size of the 4L80

Did you have a one piece drive shaft? I have thought about the transmission tunnel being an issue. Do you know which truck I can get a high hump out of? I've seen them used on other bagged trucks.

I had a one piece shaft, so I guess the 2 piece will help with that issue. Just have to worry about the angles.

The high hump came in most big block trucks and 4x4s. I bought one in the For Sale section. It also depends on how low you go. Some guys with the engine set forward on the stock cradle get away without the high hump.

It's on now. I ordered all of the Ride Tech Suspension items and Accuair.

Tomorrow I'm starting to order all of the parts for the LS conversion. Hopefully in 60 days I will have a bagged and blown Suburban.
