That's some impressive twist on the what looks like the TQ housing! (I'm no fan of autos and even less knowledgeable about them)

But, in line with masterbeavis' comments, I've often read on forums like this one that the 4L80Es are much stronger than even built 700Rs. And built 4L80Es can take some serious abuse. Might be worth it in the long run to save up to go heavier duty so you can forget about tranny troubles for a while. Maybe a long while if you don't try to show off to '05 Stangs.

94 astro wouldnt have a 4l80e. its a bit expensive to get the standalone electronics to work with a carbed motor as well.you would need to find a 3/4 ton or heavier truck to get a 4l80e. then get a standalone control unit from tci which is 1200 bucks on its own.i have had two seperate ones that refused to communicate with the laptop.real pita

cableguy is right. The 4L80E is an outstanding tranny, however it makes the work doing up a 700R4 look like fun. You can get a stand alone harness and computer out of a certian year (I have NFC WHAT year) diesel truck/burb...but they are far and few between. (When was the last time you saw a 6.2/6.5 truck in the bone yard...and what was left on it?)

but if you were to find a diesel computer it has to be completely reprogrammed for the gas engine more cash there

94 Astro will have a 4L60E.

About the only vehicles with 4L80E's....something with a diesel or a big block, 1 ton, or special ordered.

The E part of 4L80E is what is the kicker....everything is controlled electronically....upshift, line pressure, blah, blah, blah....

Why not build Turbo 400 and use a switch pitch torque converter?

that is possibly the worst carnage i have ever seen. makes me wonder if the TV cable was adjusted correctly. these things can build LOTS of pressure and in the one pic it looks like she split at the end of the input shaft.

The 4L80E was first used in '91 IIRC, and in that year the 6.2 diesel was still used, which did NOT have a computer. I believe it was used for a few years after that as well. These should work with a carb'd gasser, but they won't be common.

Sheesh… talk about no way to limp home. I believe the technical term for that is “total spontaneous disassembly”.

700R4 or otherwise…. that just ain’t right. I’d be tempted to lay it all out in front of the builders shop door and guard the pile like a rabid dog until I had a check in hand.

Since you bent the shaft, I would suggest checking the pinion bearing.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Glad your dog was not hurt. Part could have come through the floor. What year tranny was it. I have heard pre '87 and not as good as '87 on.

COOL, all from a stocker. Duece better put a block under the pedal, or we will have more carnage in Canada.

I'm surprised the guy with the 05 Mustang didn't file a claim against your insurance company. To be honest if someone's car shedded parts in front of my car and damaged it I would be asking for the name of their insurer.

That my friends, is why I'll pay the extra dough up front to get a 4l80e for my GMC. You save that money on the first tranny explosion that you prevented.

I plan to use the diesel shifter, I know a few guys who will re-program one for me. They are relatively simple to re-program as far as I am aware. They apparantly use a prom similar to any older GM ECM, and its just a matter of setting the shift table up for a gasoline engine rather than a diesel engine, which means that a guy has to do a couple of different tables, depending on the TPS, VSS, etc.

I'll have to keep my eyes out in the Uxbridge area for an oil slick. At least you had fun with it for most of the summer. Good luck on the repairs.

You will see the puddle for sure. Hwy 48 and Davis drive. Go west towards newmarket on Davis Drive and about 40 feet after the lights there is a huge puddle of fluid. I marked my spot.

I went to the shop today and showed the tranny shop the pitcures of the damage. I brought the dented drive shaft and a milk crate full of parts I picked up off the road and the tranny. He is not going to take care of anything but rebuild the tranny and in his words

"it will be cheep"

I hope when I show up it's Free. I still need to gater a god chunk of cash just to get the tranny back in the truck.
