Re: my 1970 C30 HD project

How are you planning on registering this so you can haul a load? Your current cab data plate shows a gross of what 10K? Thinking this may be a very limiting factor especially with a diesel and a 10 speed.

in ohio it will be regristered as a 0ne ton Non Commercial truck. i do not have to declare a rated GVW on a non com truck. as long as i stay under 24K between my truck and trailer im legal. and i have never seen or heard of anyone around here getting busted for overweight in a non com vehical so i think ill be ok. i am hopeing i dont have to many issues ar the DMV titleing this truck though.

Re: my 1970 C30 HD project

Hope this works out for you. But may I suggest starting on the process before you get in too deep to make changes. Hoping you won't have a problem and knowing where you stand can make a lot of difference. While your path is not quite what I want to build I very much want you to succeed in your project and be able to enjoy it. Right now I am trying to sort out the specifics here in California and pretty much the western states on what I can do without having to worry about scales.

Re: my 1970 C30 HD project

yea i do to. we have a valid title for the truck, and that part is checked out. i will have to get it inspected when i go to regester it again. thats the part that im a little concerned about. the truck must be 'roadworthy' for inspection so i pretty much have to build the thing and do all the mechanicals first. body condition dosent matter.
as far as ohio goes if i stay under 12 ton gross i dont have to roll across the scales. and with what i plan to do with this truck i dont forsee any issues with that. im just going to be pulling a few antique tractors to showes with it. it wont go much more than 70 miles from home. hope you can get a good direction on your project as well. it would be much easier if there wernt all these dang laws..lol

That truck is in Nashville, TN. A good friend of mine knows the guy that had it (and he shot the video). It was for sale about 2 years ago, not sure if it actually sold or not. It was a lot of work, definitely not a bolt-in swap. He raised the cab and had to do a lot of fabrication on everything. The engine and Allison trans came from a low mile military surplus truck of some sort. The truck was an old phone company truck I think.

Re: my 1970 C30 HD project

I put a 1972 1/2 ton (5000GVW) body on a 2002 Dodge (cummins) chassis & just continued to use the 1972 registration with a 7000# plate. A very nice DOT cop pulled me over to check out my trailer a few years ago & I let him open the door to check my GVW rating. I had a hard time keeping a straight face when he looked at the truck chassis (a 3/4 ton) then the 5000# rating in the jamb. He looked at the chassis & the jamb 3 times, trying to make sense of it all- I just stood there quietly. He finally told me to have a nice day & let me go.

Re: my 1970 C30 HD project

hi, very interested in your build. Curious what your plans are about the front axle having such a wide track compared to original? I'm about to embark on a project for towing our race car from Texas to Bonneville every year, 1500+ miles with a 10k trailer....I plan on using my '69 Suburban and would like to use the I-beam from axle form the HD and well as the rear but using only the inner wheel. I would like the front to be tucked under to fender, so shortening the axle will likely be in the plans. The Suburban is sitting on a late 70s k20 frame so it has leafs up front already. it will be 12v Cummins powered.

Fuel dilutes the oil film on the cylenders and causes the cylenders to wear prematurly. this isnt a truck thats gunna get drivin everyday. its gunna be pulling a heavy trailer when it dose get drivin. not something im really worried about.

Could always build a tube axle like the HD Dodges used. Make it to fit using D60 "Cs" and outers, brakes ect. Basically it would be a K30 SRW installation without gears or axles, just a tube.

with the fender set up there it looks like the tire is still inside the fender well. however it is close to the edge. were gunna leave it alone on our truck. if you need any measurements or info let me know. we hope to have the cab mounted perminat and the front clip on it this weekend so ill throw some better pics up.

we actually planned to do that if we couldent find an HD. it would actually be much easier to build a tube axle with D 60 outers than try to put this HD axle in another truck.

Re: my 1970 C30 HD project

Looking good! Yeah the tires look fine in the last pic. If you have time could you hang a string down to the tire outer sidewall and see where it would hit on the fender and post a pic? You have really good clearance as your trukket sist alot higher than Im planning. Just curious if i hit a huge hole or dip and the front end comes down enough to touch, where the tires would hit....thanks a ton!

lol i just noticed that i didnt even post the right picture. ive got some actual mounted pics but i ghess there still on my phone. ive got the whole front clip hung on it now. i hopefully will have the core support mounts finished this weekend. ill throw a plumb bob on there when i get the mounts done and show you where the tires sit. that space is still a little deceving, theres about 1500 pounds of engine and transmission that still need to go in there.
