Gauge needle paint

Does anyone know were I can get the correct color of paint for my gauge needles? I bought some Acrylic all purpose orange but it's too light, any suggestions?

Re: Gauge needle paint

I live in a small, small town options are limited to napa, oreillys, and ace hardware. Wal-mart is 35 miles, one way. I'm pretty much limited to ordering off the net.

Re: Gauge needle paint

Thanks for the help guys. I found it here, http://testors.com/catalog_item.asp?itemNbr=786. I went ahead and ordered it. Small towns are great till you need something, even worse after living in the OKC area for 32 years and anything you need/want is less than 1 mile away.

Re: Gauge needle paint

Here are some pics of a couple that I did for myself. They are dusty, and I have a cheap camera, but hopefully you can see the color. The dash without the woodgrain has a aftermarket tach, and the needle has not been repainted on it, but it matches very well. On the first one that I built, I used model paint from Walmart, and mixed two colors to get the color that I wanted, and brush painted them. It came out ok, but it was glossy, and the needles faded pretty quick. The Krylon is semi-gloss, and looks alot better than my brush paint looked. I don't know how bad it fades yet. It is alot easier, and quicker to spray them in my opinion. I simply cut a slit in a piece of paper, and slide it under the needle, and around the shaft. Then I take another piece and slide it in the opposite direction to mask the gauge face. Put 2-3 coats on and you're done. The tach center is another story, lol. Hey byrd, what's the secret to getting those lenses so slick?

Re: Gauge needle paint

Good eye hugger, that is a factory original lens in the tach dash pic I posted, I can't take the credit for it I pay a fellew member to polish them up for me to use.Lamar is his user name on here and his name as well. He makes them look like glass and says just uses a buffing wheel on a bench grinder with some polishing compund(I don't know what he uses) and says it only takes him about 15-30 minutes to do each one. They are much nicer than the repops, but in direct sunlight there is a few lines that are not very noticable, however the factory lenses seem to be more scratch resistant than the repops, and all of them will have some scratches anyway from normal cleaning of the lens.

Re: Gauge needle paint

Hugger I'm sure the lenses in the pics you posted look better than in the pics, that flash does some really weird things, the needles look like they match up really well and the dashes them selves look really nice. Next time might iI suggest, you use some scotch(clear household tape) tape and mask off the hot mark on the temp gauge to paint it the same color as the needles,(remove tape while the paint is still wet and then set the dash up so that the paint won't run) one easy and minor thing that make a big impact on the overall look of the dash....Randy

Re: Gauge needle paint

clif that is it and very easy to use, just brush it on with two or three very light coats and you will be very pleased with the outcome. Remember to clean the needles good with a small detail brush to remove any loose dirt or debris from the needles prior to paint them.

Re: Gauge needle paint

Thanks for the pics HuggerCST. Man, it's really hard to tell the difference between the krylon and the model master. I think I'll wait till the model master paint gets here and compare it with the krylon side by side before I do anything. Thanks alot for the help guys it is very much appreciated.

67 c-30,

How did you get your panel so shiney? Did you strip it down and paint it or did you buy it that way?
