Lookin' to soup up your old inline 6?

I was gonna go for that V8, but then I saw the recent developments in 'rodding out the old 6er. THis, website is great! Has **** for the 216-230-235-250-292 models (and maybe another one that I forgot). I'm really lookign into getting these:

You can put thre 1bbl's on here!!!!



Or just two...



Ad now they got headers for these things!

If you are looking to up the performance I would go with a 2bbl or a 4bbl.....I can only imagine the headache of tuning (3) 1bbl carbs, plus I would think (3) 1bbl carbs would just SUCK down the gas!
But the sound of an I6 with headers is AWESOME!

I am running a Clifford 4 brl intake, Cast headers from Tom L., Q-Jet, and maybe a hotter Cam/valve springs/rockers if the stocker doesn't preform as expected.

IMO, you can't be an inliner for truck duty...........We rebuilt a few of them over the years and kept them stock, and they would run like mad. I really like the fact they make awesome power on the low end, would handle abuse like no other, and you could really rack the miles up without laying a wrench on them. That was running stock intake, exhaust and fuel system............I can't wait to see how this new beast I have on the engine stand runs. Its gonna replace a 454 if that tells you anything.

Anyone who drives/has driven OTR truck knows "6 in a row makes it go"..........

anyone have an idea of how much hp i could gain with a fairly aggressive cam, shaving the head and giving a valve job, and a holley 2bbl? the motor is a 79 250 rated at 130 hp.i already have a straight through exhaust and have ditched the smog equipment.

not absolutely sure on the answer to your question, but when I swapped my stock exhaust manifold and intake with my headers and 4bbl carb the engine felt noticable torque'ier.....but the truck is still on jacks :smile: but it definately rocks the truck from side to side a TON more.

TP, did you want to say "you can't BEAT an inliner for truck duty"???
Either way, replacing a 454 with an INLINE.....one word, AWESOME......and do you have a link to the cast headers?

i have a 292 in my '67/'69 K20 with open headers at the moment.

V8's can keep their rumble. this thing sounds like its coming to eat your family.

i also have the 3x1 Offy triple. working on getting enough carbs for it. however, to the comment about sucking gas, it is to my understanding that it would be almost the same as a one barrel, until you put your foot in it.

progressive linkage on the 3 carbs makes it into basically a spread out 4..er..3 barrel carb. spread bore anyone? heh. with a small primary (the center carb) as it can feed all 3 intake runners.

However, when you stomp it, all 3 open up, like a 4 barrel, and the fuel distribution is evened out, causing better power, and PERHAPS better economy, though those 2 words don't really go hand in hand.

but, the 3 carbs, feeding 3 intake runners/ports...all makes sense. progressive linkage simply allows one to have versatility.


and. to prove what a "little" 250 can do, you should all check out Larry Paige, over at inliners, site.

he runs a 250 straight 6, backed by a muncie 4 speed, in a 1964 CHevy II. on his inline, are 3 850 Holleys, i beleive, on a custom sheet metal intake.

watch the videos.

and, if you're inline happy me, smile. alot. especially when he smokes not only rice rockets, but also an elky, and what looks like a later nova or monte. regardless, he's running with 350s and up, and holding his own.

quite an amazing little car.

also, you can check into have lump ports installed. costly, however the key to high speed air flow in the short turn radius of the intake valves.

and, another also. buy Leo Santucci's book. hands down, the bible for 6 cylinder hop up.

who is Leo Santucci? well, he runs a twin turboed 292 with a hybrid head (thats a v8 head chopped up and welded together to make a 6 cylinder head), and he's pusing 10's in the 1/4 mile, with bugs to work out.

sorry for the long post, but, i love my inlines.
and at 18, well, theres not many of us out there anymore...heh.

The 6 really looks good rodded.I like Zeeks.I also like the fact that it's not a bellybutton engine.I believe the small block has the most performance stuff made for anything and that they are the greatest engine ever built,but I sure get tired of looking at bellybutton billeted smallblocks at car/truck shows.

This is my friend's 261 in his 52. 261 was the big six before the 250 series. This one is bored 60, head shaved and professionally ported by another friend who ports racing heads. Dual Holley-Weber progressive 2 barrels, offy intake, full race cam, cast Fenton headers, Unilite distributor with MSD-6. Very streetable, but wicked. This engine's factory redline was 3,600 rpm, he has turned over 6,000. Running pump gas I would guess he's around 250 hp.

clifford has some cool stuff for the 292. I used to have headers and the triple webber intake on mine before I went with the 400. I have to say I kind of miss the sound of a 292 with headers and single chamber flowmasters =/.

Yeah, that is what I ment to say

For what I am using my trucks for, SBC or BBC's don't work well enough to suit me. I searched for a long time for a SBC powered 3/4 ton...............Thought it would be the ticket for pulling. Got a nice one bought and we started using it on the farm. Now, we had a little '69 C-10 with a 250/3spd we used for years on most of these jobs and it took all the abuse we could throw at it and came back for more..............One day I was hauling hay wagons to a farm we were renting about 4 miles away..........It was on top of a mountain and all up hill from our home place. I left with one wagon(These were kicker wagons that look like a big wooden cage on wheels).............My brother had the C-10 with another wagon and he left not long after I did...........I got on the hill and my C-20 had a 3spd behind the 350, just like we had behind the 250............While those wagons aren't heavy at all, they drag alot of wind like trying to hold a piece of 4x8 plywood in a 50 mph wind, so I couldn't run 3rd, I didn't have the low end for it, I tried believe me...........So I was down in 2nd with that SBC just screaming contemplating why I wanted this engine so bad .......All of a sudden I hear this roaring, looked in my mirror, here's my brother in the C-10, pulling out from behind me and he goes by like I was standing still while my big bad 350 is running its guts out. Now, let me tell you, if you have driven semi at all or know anyone who does.............Getting passed on a hill is the ULTIMATE slap in the face So I went back to what I know works. Alot of my friends said I should have put a cam, heads, etc, etc on the BB and left it in the truck...........Well, one thing I learned farm stock tractor pulling and driving OTR, short stroke and high rpm doesn't get you anywhere unless you have a 2 stroke Diesel Jimmy and alot of gears

That same 250 that was in the C-10 is what the K is getting

Wow! I didn't know there were so amy inline enthusiasts. I guess I'll just fix up the 230 and soup it up. (I'd get in trouble with a V8 anyway).

So, in general, what all would you recommend doing with my 230 to make it nice and fast (or atleast have more hitch in it's giddyup)?

Nothing too expensive mind you, I still have bodywork I want to do this summer. I'm thinking of a two 1bbl setup, headers, and HEI ignition. Anything I'm forgetting?
