I agree. If it's done right, it's hard to tell the difference.

You could take a truck like Bob68327's & scotchbrite (or buff until the top coat of OE primer is just starting to bleed through) the top of the hood, fender, & bedside edges, add a little moisture & create a custom 'patina' look vs. the original aged paint. It's not original but done right would still look great.

67_ C-30's new beater would be killer w/a once over w/some color sanding. It would clean it up while retaining much of the 'look'.

I actually understand what many owners echo. I would rather have a mechanically sound vehicle w/aged paint vs. a painted to the hilt show car. Instead of actually worrying about the vehicles finish all the time you could actually enjoy it more by driving it.

Interesting.... I guess my truck would be considered "Patina" then....

Personally, I like the look. It has character!

Good post Longhair. You express my sentiments exactly. I love any "look" that has a direction and purpose that is executed properly. Be it restored, lowered, lifted, driven daily, or trailered mostly. Yeah, I dig patina...

Two good examples of trucks that look awesome but have the original paint are Scoti's and n2billets old truck Lucy.

Re: Patina, love it or hate it?

I agree 100% with both LONGHAIR and N2TRUX. As long as its done right and at the owners own pace.... meaning when funds are availiable. Just don't let the truck completely rotten away,,, take care of the rot and leave the surface rust for the Patina look....... I'm a fan of all Chevy trucks but mostly 67-72. Just my .02 cents.

To quote the builder..... " it's been buffed within an inch of its life! ". That is (except for a small repaired area on the pass bedside) the OE paint.

Wow, I have drooled over that truck dozens of times and didn't realize that was original paint.

Re: Patina, love it or hate it?

You have to install vintage wheels to paint the truck with patina?? if you want you can paint the truck with urethane with no shine!!

Re: Patina, love it or hate it?

I just acquired a '68 short step, patina red. It needs a few dents beat out, but I have an expert body man to handle that without paint repair. It only needs one patch panel, front lower part of the passenger front fender. I won't drive a Chevy truck with cancer rust, just like I won't drive a Corvette with a bad paint job, there are plenty of straight trucks in my part of Texas. How can I have that patch panel replaced and still fit the look? I don't want to fake it, won't try to make it match, but what would be the right primer, etc.? Second, is there a prep/chemcial that can be sprayed on the entire truck to stop the rust, then clear coat it flat?
I'm going to try to build a badass street truck on the widest untubbed street tires I can fit in slightly stretched fenders. NO tubs is essential for the look. I have plenty of faded and dinged sheetmetal for a big block and I just happen to have a bad bigblock handy, I want to carry the patina theme under the hood and make this thing look as stock as possible. My goal is to hit low 10's with a truck that looks like a bona-fide beater/survivor. These trucks have as strong of launching stock rear suspension as was ever built in any car or truck and in plain street trim, they're relatively light. I had my choice of beds, I picked the step because I'm a fat fender kinda guy, my other driver is a dually
Now back to our regularly scheduled thread, sorry for the hijack.

Re: Patina, love it or hate it?

I'll get 'em as soon as I can.
I guess I forgot to address the thread question.
I like the survivor/beater look with no rust holes. I'm just hoping someone knows a way to preserve the look at a certain stage with clearcoat, etc., I don't want ALL the paint gone

I know you said you don't want to fake it, but that's what I did on my driver's door. You could fix the holes and try this. Any primer or different colored paint kinda kills the paina/survivor look IMO.

This is what I did. Crude, but it looks better that the black paint did IMO.

I would love to find one that looks like that. Work on everything else while driving it around. It looks cool while your working on it. Once everything else is done time to fix that pantina look before its to late.
