it's a good thing my wife doesn't read these forums....

I just got off the phone with the paint supply store... on top of the $200 i spent on primer for just the front clip, it's gonna be another 700 bucks for paint and clear. about double what i was hoping for, but it's getting done damn it!

also, i'm not going hugger now, mostly due to cost. Monza Red is the color now. after putting a paint chip up to the inside of my fender with good light, it's clear what the color is.

I'll post an update and pics tonight of the work that was done this weekend.

having some issues with photoshop, so the pics will be coming soon.

nothing really to show from last weekend other than the gas tank getting mounted and plumbed, and a boat load of sanding.

this weekend... heh, i get giddy just thinking about what's happening this weekend.

lets just say, i'll be doing a lot of standing around "watching paint dry". i can't wait!!

okay...i'll make an update with some pics...you've all seen the pictures of the what the motor looked like before we pulled it and now i have a few pics of it almost completely put back togeather.....

and if i do say so myself i think the motor looks like it should run ALOT better since the timing chain had almost 4 degrees slop in it and few other things here and there....i'll have some more of the "replaced" parts later

okay so here goes....sorry that most of the pics are blury...crappy camera and kinda tired...anyways...i'll start off with the major issue..

first was the timing chain, which as you have read was toast. I have never seen a chain this worn out not jump time before...(note the grooves in the the cam gear as it was a factory gear that was supose to have smooth teeth)

and as for the broken bolt. when i was installing the new timing set i was down to torquing the last of three bolts when all of a sudden (at about 10 ft. lbs.) SNAP! broke off flush with the end of the cam. needless to say, my jaw hit the floor. luckly alls it took as a punch and a light tap with a hammer and it backed out...

and the next major issue was the old rivet style balancer....ended up having to (persuade) it a little to get it to come loose. that was after i drill the three bolt holes all the way through so i could put nuts on the back side since it pulled all the threads out. Not to meantion it was basically toast anyways

oh, and don't forget the main reason we desided to pull the motor and "refresh" it a bit....the freakin' thing leaked like no other....the main reason was the rear main seal (no picture) and the other reason was the front pan seal....the picture shows why...


the push rods were replaced with some slightly used ones as these 3 were cracked over halfway through and on the verge of breaking...caused by rust pitting and then stress

last series of pics for replaced engine parts i promise...

the first picture is of the valve covers, timing cover and oil pump. Ivel wanted some chrome so he got chrome valve covers and timing chain cover. the oil pump we replaced because it wasn't a costly item (around $20) and i was gonna have to pull it off while replacing the rear main anyways..

the oil pump drive shaft was replaced mainly because it was a $6 item and also because of the fact that when i turned the motor over on the stand it fell out due to the nylon lock ring being split in several places.

the last picture is of all the bolts that mainly weren't needed...the timing cover came with new chrome bolts and the one piece oil pan gasket (which as cake to install) also came with new pan bolts.... as for the acorn nut covers....they looked retarded on the motor and neither Ivel nor myself were a big fan of them...

i got word tonight that the clip has primer on it. i'm heading up there early tomorrow morning to wrap up the final prep before paint on saturday.

it's 12:30am. the second coat of build primer is getting sprayed right now. 2 hour cure time before wet sanding. we'll be at the paint booth @ 7am ready to go.

i'm a tease... and it's gonna continue for tonight cause my feet are killing me and i don't want to go get the camera

so i finished sanding the truck at 4:15am and came into the house. i got about 1.5 hrs sleep before my dad woke me up to go @ 6:15. i should have just stayed up and loaded up the truck, but the couch was comfy... i didn't even take my shoes off cause i wasn't really tired, and thought i'd get back up. but then again, the couch was comfy

so, we didn't make 7am, but we were there by 8:30. we got the bed off the truck and on to a cart so we could move it around, then the guys at the shop looked over my handy work. overall things looked good, but there were a few spots that needed more sanding. so, we sanded for about 4 hours or so, then started cleaning to get ready for paint around1pm.

btw, when i got up, my feet were really starting to hurt, so i wasn't moving to fast at all.

anyways, the paint started to fly around 1pm. we ended up with 3 coats of color and 3 coats of clear. only a couple mishaps during the whole ordeal that were easily fixed with some color sanding after the flash. the two big boo-boos of the day were when i went to tack everything off after color, before clear, i hit a wet spot on the grill. we set it aside to let it dry while we got started on the clear. they other was when i went to put the repair grill on the rack and tack it, i bumped the fender with my shirt. since it baredly touched it, and it had 3 coats of clear on it, we left it and plan to wet sand it out. hopefully it all comes out.

the pics do look awesome, as does the truck. I'll have to wet sand the whole truck with 1500 and 2000, but that will have to wait until after the midwest meet. By waiting that long it will be harder to do, but it'll still happen.

tomorrow we'll put the bed on and haul it home where it will sit until next weekend.

then the marithon rebuild takes place.

i don't think these pics really show the color well. they look more orangy than it really is. the color is "Monza Red" and was used on 69-70 vettes.

It is a very red red. i can't see how anyone could call it orange in person now.
