Factor in the rate of inflation since this ad came out, and then look at what I was making then, and they were as unaffordable then, as they are now at today's prices.
Sucks.

The way inflation works, if you could afford an $1150 aluminum, bare 454 block then, you can afford a $4607.51 ZL1 454 aluminum bare block at GMPartsdirect today.
A decent, pickup back then was what, $3000 - $4000? That same truck today is $20,000 to $30,000. Let's split the difference and say $3500 for a truck then, $25,000 today. 3500/25000 = 0.14. Comparing bare aluminum 454 blocks 1150/4607 = 0.249xxx. Round up to 0.25. Trucks have gone up 7 times the price. Bare aluminum 454 blocks only went up 4 times the price. If the price of a truck is the standard, those engine component prices are HIGHER today when adjusted for inflation compared to what you can get now. The price of a car or truck is a poor standard. Minimum wage is what a lot of people base things off of. The minimum wage was raised to $1.60/hour in February of 1971. July 24, 2007 the minimum wage was raised to $5.85. 1.60/5.85 = 0.27 which better agrees with our aluminum 454 block standard. If you were making the minimum wage in 1971, and could afford a 454 al block new, you can today on minimum wage. Of course we have no idea when that engine component ad was valid. But if it was 1971, and you could afford this stuff then, you can now.

The biggest one I see that inflation couldn't adjust for is the 302 short block. It was only $4 more than the 350! I'm really not good enough at math to figure up the short block cost then as compared to now but even with the adjustment for inflation I'm sure the 302 price would still be a steal!

The trucks that were $3,500 back then are $35,000+ now.Anyone can do that math,even Asa.
How about an $11,000 block?The thing were it gets tricky with inflation comparisons is there were ways around alot of expenses that are not there now.The buck just don`t spread like it did back then.I`m witness to that.Wages have lagged behind inflation progressively worse for the past 35 years.I made $5 an hour doing what I do now and had money to play with.I`d be lucky to get $25 an hour,now,with 35 more years experience.
