400 turbo, no park, why?

I have a 1970 one ton truck with a 350 engine and a 400 turbo, I think it was originally a big camper truck, but has been made into a flatbed, the transmission has no park from the factory. Why did they do this?

Post a pic of steering column showing wheel and gear selector including the indicator....

They all have a Park position...above Reverse....PRND2L

Does the trans have a large hand brake drum on the output shaft?

Re: 400 turbo, no park, why?

My 69 GMC was like that. No parking pawl in the trans and just RNDL on the column. I changed out the column to a tilt and put the lever in the trans when I rebuilt it. I think the reason was the GVW rating. Somewhere along the line I think they thought a 10k plus rated truck would break the trans because a lot of people do not set the parking brake. Without park it was mandatory that you did. I've seen quite a few that way in both the 10 and 14k ratings.

Thanks KW....

That's why I asked OP about large handbrake drum on rear of trans...

10k and 14k trucks are strange like that...

OP listed his truck as a 1970 One Ton truck....

Hence my response

Mine did not have the P brake on the trans, just the normal drums on the rear axle. When I got my 69 it was a class B motor home that was all rotted out with only 49k on the speedo

Yes, my truck is just like KWMECH's. I guess you could call it a motor home, but it is a truck cab with a humongous camper on back that was removed by PO to make a flatbed. He told me about the park and I would have thought he was full of it, but the column indicator doesn't have P either. Hence, I asked my question.

Yeah, mine used to be a Class B motorhome that was rotted beyond repair. I cut 2 feet of frame off the back and still ended up with a 10' long deck
