C20 8 lug disc brake conversion

I have a 69' Suburban C20 8 lug with 17" wheels and OEM drum brakes all around. The 69' has new springs that I think I can reuse. I also have what I was told is the front "A" arms, spindles, disc brakes etc for a 1971 3/4 ton. I am posting picks of what I have. I'd like feedback on where to go next and what ALL else I need to do to COMPLETE the conversion all at once (no trips to the parts store). My plan is to disassemble all this stuff and sandblast and Por15, clean and repair everything to be ready to reinstall including replaceing the rotors and calipers. I want to replace all the ball joints, tie rod ends, bearings, seals, hoses, bushings and bump stops before the install. I have read the FAQ on brakes conversions and while it was very helpful, I did not understand a few things like hoses, hose adapters, proportioning valves etc. ANY feedback would be helpful and much appreciated.

Re: 3/4 ton disc brake conversion

I got all of this stuff disassembled and scraped today. I still have to press out the lower ball joints and somehow get the "A" arm shafts to disassemble. I think its going to take heat and a big cheater bar! After that it all goes to the sand blaster and then Ill Por15 it all then, Ill start buying parts.

Re: 3/4 ton disc brake conversion

I'm not as familiar with the c20 suspension,... but you may need the centerlink and tie rods from a 71-72 3/4 ton, to work with your dic brake spindles.

Re: 3/4 ton disc brake conversion

Thanks for the heads up. I checked LMC. Some parts interchange and some don't. Ill look into it deeper.

You are correct. I will need new tie rod ends and center link. I was planning on tie rod ends anyway so what I need now is a source for the center link. I just don't seem to be able to find one. Any ideas?

Re: 3/4 ton disc brake conversion

I found a center link. Now to determine if I should spend the extra $ and get the entire control arms or just get the bushings and seals from LMC. My control arms are in great shape and I think they are originals which means good steel vs Chinese crap. The difference in the cost of the two options is fairly substantial, about $115.

Re: 3/4 ton disc brake conversion

Ok all the parts were disassembled, acid tanked, bead blasted and coated in Por15. When I removed the dust shields, there was a rubber gasket in the center hole. I can not find replacement gaskets. Any ideas where I can get them? Now I need to begin buying parts as money is available.

Re: 3/4 ton disc brake conversion

Wow....The list of stuff just keeps going and going!!
Now I find out that I need a new master cylinder, proportioning valve and brake line kit to get this all installed. My nice simple drum to disc brake swap gets more and more expensive. In the end, I will try to make a complete list of the parts needed to complete this job.

So far I've got the following stuff on the list.
All parts are for a 71'/72' C20 unless specified.
Upper and lower control arms, left and right.
Upper and lower control arm shafts, 2 each.
Upper and lower balljoints, 2 each.
Inner and outer tie rod ends, 2 each.
Tie rod adjuster sleeves, 2.
Idler arm.
Center link.
Calipers, 2.
Rotors, 2.
Outer wheel bearings (the inners come pre-installed with the new rotors), 2.
Wheel bearing seals, 2.
Master cylinder.
Proportioning valve.
Hard brake line kit.
Soft brake lines, 2.
Brake pads and hardware kit.
Upper and lower rubber bump stops, 2 each.
Alignment after completion.

Ill ad more as it comes up.
