Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Thanks for the sudgestions. They offered good pricing on 10 and 15 sets. As far as road testing them I haven't. I recon I will purchase the modified rotors and see if they fit a stock axle with no mods. If so I will go ahead and remove the current disc brakes on my 87 and install the c5 brakes. Price point even for the small run would at or less than 175. First batch would be a lower price just to get them moving. Next week I will order the rotors and some front hubs for the truck. Till ten keep the feedback comming

thanks

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Can you tell me what the modified rotors are? Is it just a 5x5 bolt circle with 2.776" register and the backside milled for the axle O.D. size.? I might have something here that might work if that's all that the "modified rotors are.

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

I would be interested as I am planning on the full c6 zo6 kit on my 72 c-10. I was excited to see the progress you have made on these ebrake components. Let me know if you move forward. I have been thinking spring time for my major brake expense if all goes well. I could spend the money on your brackets before then if you move forward. Looks great man Thanks. Phil

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Closer to Xmas I plan to order the front hubs and c5 front brakes.. Then I will also order their modified rotors to see if they fit the non modified axle.

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

I have not started on the fronts. I finaly got an email back from moser on a set of the replacment 28spline axles... seems Its going to be a 2 step process on the machine work. They can do the facotry c-10 axles with the camaro (same as corvette) hub diameter, but they dont have the tooling to cut into the face of the flange to make the face of it 5.9"... they can cut the whole thing down to 5.9" but that doesnt leave a lot of meat on the outer edge of the lug hole. I will have the axles shipped to the place that mod'ed my 12 bolt axles for mock up. Maybe since he has to do less work the cost will be cheaper? probaly not though. All he will have to do is cut the face of the flange down to 5.9 and around .15 deep.
In the end, the axles are old, the truck see's WOT often enough... mine as well invest in a new pair of axles. Of course if your axles were not pitted on the bearing surface, you could just have yours modified.

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

alrighty, axles have arrived from Moser. They look perdy.. they fit the rotor perfectly so I cant complain there, but he understood the request to step down the original diameter of 6 3/8 and step it down to 5.9 on the face of the flange.... they just buzzed it down to 5.9... theres .188" of meat between the edge of the flange and the edge of the hole. I contacted them and they said .125 is the mimimum. So on that front we are ok.
Autozone... geeze... a lesser man would have told this person to go back to the parts truck and wait till tomarrow before trying to help. And then the manager... "well....." got dang. I simply wanted rear axle bearings.. the ones at the end of the axle flange... I recall mine being cylinder like roller bearings, NOT tapered or ball bearing. 1st she said here ya go... and I open the box and its a tapered bearing, no race.. Are the rear axle bearings tapered? I'd rather have the bearings I need when I take the rear end apart... rather than take the bearing out, and then go to the store and then...

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

well after going to timken.com and doing a quick search, the bearings I need are 6408. I'll go back tomarrow and see if they can get that number... Its either autozone = timken, or Oreilly = national..... I never heard of national, but Timken is familair.

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

update: photo illustration on how I redrilled the 5x5 pattern.

printed template

trimmed timplate freehand to get rid of excess, have the butyl tape ready for next step

2 things happened in this step. 1st was to get a piece of cardboard and a pick. I placed the template on the cardboard and used the pick to punch through the center " X " of the 5x5 pattern. this will allow me to see where I need to place the center punch in the following step. 2nd thing that happened in this step was to apply a smear of the butyl tape. Its similar to sticky tack (the blue stuff) but its automotive grade and can be real sticky and messy when it gets real warm. I smeared 4 little spots on the tempate so it will stick to the front of the rotor.

Placed the template with the butyl tape on the face of the rotor, and then aligned the center "hub" cirlce to the center hole of the rotor, then centered the 5x4.75 pattern through the lug holes

Used a center punch and punced each of the 5x5 pattern on the dimples we made in the previous step with the pick and cardboard. A firm tap with a hammer does the trick. I will go back over it once all 5 have been done prior to drilling. I didnt take a photo of me drilling becuase thats just boring. I had a lot of worn out bits (forgot my decent set at work ). Basically went in steps, 1/8 so it could find the center punch mark real easy. then went up to 1/4, then 3/8, then I think i went strait to 1/2 then to 9/16. Due to my choice of wheel stud, Dorman 610-298, 2" long wheel stud, they have shoulder of 5/16, stock doesnt have one at all.... The shoulder requires you to put a chamfer on the inside of the 5x5 pattern so the rotor will sit on the axle flange rather than the stud. no big deal. I simply had a 5/8 drill bit and went down untill the drill bit made its full diameter into the rotor. Imagine when you are going from small drill bit to bigger... and when you first start drilling the beginning of the hole isnt 100% round, it takes a little bit of depth before its the diameter of the bit, thats how it looked. I did not finish the brakes, I kept on forgetting things at the parts store . I need to double check a few things, remove, take photos, paint, re assemble, bleed, fill axle fluid and bed the pads in.

but heres a pic of them on 17" wheels... 1.8" smaller than what I had before, the caliper is a lot smaller than the one I had before but its a bit more proportionate.. either way, it looks great, parking brake is 2 cables away

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

test drove it today, feels good, truck still stops great. I dont know what to compare it to really. I pushed the brake as hard as I could and I could hear the tires start to break loose at 1500 rpm.... I didnt do that to the previous disc brake setup so thats just a number. I need to order a posi and a set of gears due to the fact I seen a few damaged teeth on the spider gears. I will order those 2 and a adjustable prop valve and gut the factory one and go from there. I would say I need some more pressure back there. I never bought one with the previous setup. Next weekend I will work on the ebrake cable length and hookup.

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Oh yeah, a factory 15" steel rally with tape weight will barely fit this setup. Only modification to get it to clear is sanding down the corner of the caliper and caliper mount. It rubbed the paint off of the inner rim. Either that or a thin shim, maybe 1/8 would suffice. The wheels I have now fit perfect with out my 1.5" adapter/spacer. The spacer is to push the wheel out to match the front track width.

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Finally sent the final drawing file over to the cutter to get quoted, it includes shims the required shims to center the factory caliper bracket/mount over the rotor. Based on the 12 bolt and the 10 bolt I have it takes between .110 - .130. So each set will have 4 12ga spacers and 24 18ga spacers... 12ga is .10460" and 18 gauge is .0478".

well after a week of bad news, one good thing happened. The cutter called to let me know my order shipped yesterday... I was shocked becuase I was estimated 3-4 weeks not 5 days. When they get in, I will post up pic's.

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Got the 10 sets of brackets in today.. man that was one heavy box... ups said 62 lbs. I need to run various drill bits through all of the holes to ensure no burrs or snags to prevent the brackets from being bolted up. Other than that everything lookes awesome!

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Cool!

Do you have part numbers for the parking brakes and caliper/cages pictured above so that we can get local pricing?

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

I can get a quote from a local dealer and post up the part numbers. As far as best pricing, I'd say kore3.com has the best pricing. 225.00 for the calipers and cages w/ caliper to cage bolts. If I remember correctly the parking brake shoe/plate kit was 165.00 for both sides. They also have a selection of rotors that range from 41.50 (plain) and genuine GM performance drilled for 90.00. They also have the hoses too. Thats where I found the best deal... even cheaper than oriellys rotors....

Re: True C5 Rear Disc w/ internal parking brake in the works

Laid out one set and snapped a photo. The E-brake holders are set up for Locar Ebrake cables.. they have a threaded rod that passes through the bracket and gets secured with a nut. If you want to use factory LS cables, you can drill out the small hole and use a 5/8 Drill bit and use the supplied holder (the small bracket to the far left) and secure it with the supplied 1/4 fastners.

9 sets left
