Crap…

I was replacing my speedometer cable (first time.) I screwed the cableend into the tranny, then decided to unscrew it and try it again. When unscrewing the cap I did not get it completely off, but though I did. When tried tp pull it
out the nylon speedo gear came out with round housing that slides into the tranny case ….Ttranny oil came pouring out and in the confusion I dropped the plastic gear inside the casining!

I can barely touch if I stick my little finger in there..

The nut for the retainer was already loose and I didn’t know what it was there for so I took it off… the first mistake.

Now what do I have to do, to get the nylon gear out? – What’s involved in removing that “case”?

I did that once with an M20 4 spd.... Seemed to me the only way to retrieve the gear was disassemble the trans. I got a new plastic gear and left the old one in there. Never had any trouble.

If you could get a short piece of tubing and some wire you could make a "dogcatcher" type noose, fish around with the wire loop until you wrap it around the gear then pull it tight. Otherwise I would probably leave it in there.

You should be able to pull your driveshaft then remove the four bolts that hold your tailshaft housing on. The housing should come right off. You may have to lightly tap it on either side but it shouldn't be to hard. Make sure you set the parking brake and chock it before you pull the driveshaft or you will get a surprise if you are on any incline at all.
While it's off is a great opportunity to change the seal.

The way I have been told is to put a pan under the back of the transmission. Take out the drive shaft and undo the 4 bolts that hold the tail shaft on to the transmission case. Pull the housing off. Most of the fluid should come out now. You can jack the back up real high and wont loose as much fluid when you do this. Get your gear. Get a new gasket for the housing. Bolt the housing back up. Reinstall gear into the round housing. Slide back into the hole. Once it is in put the lock tang into the groove. Then tighten the lock tang bolt. Hook up your speedo cable. Refill with transmission fluid. Hope this helps. The housing removes easily to change out the inner gear when trying to set the speedo for different wheel and gear combos.

I checked your profile to see what kind of tranny you had....

I tried to remove the back housing of my saginaw but was not able to. Not sure what was holding it up but I figured it was not coming out if I whacked it.

Anyway, if you can touch it with your finger, you may be able to rig up a wire loop or maybe use one of these.

Also, a long needle nose curved scissor clam or pliars may work.
