Looking for opinion on bed swap

I am needing some guidance from those of you with more knowledge and experience with these trucks since I am fairly new to this.

I have a 1970 C20 with a long bed. The bed on my truck is not original to the truck or the year so it does not match. The wood needs to be completely replaced. I recently came upon an opportunity to purchase a metal long bed that has the tool box storage but the storage door has cancer. The seller is asking $400 for the bed. Is that reasonable? It seems the beds with storage do not come up often on craigslist, but with the rot in the door I'm not sure what amount would be reasonable. If I buy it I would get a bed that matches the color of my truck and one that is metal vs. wood. Thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Looking for opinion on bed swap

My guess is your current bed is a 67, no side marker lights and mouldings. The tool box is cool, but outside desert areas, they are usually pretty rusty. If the TB bedside is the correct color and in good shape, $400 is pretty good if the floor and rest of the bed is straight.

My guess is your wanting to keep the trucks original patina, but it is a guess. I would get the bed. If the door on the side is the only rust seal it up with rust convertor or something to stop the continuing rust then it will add to the look of the truck, or at least until you can find another door or paint the truck.

Re: Looking for opinion on bed swap

Nothing wrong with $400 for a good bed without rust. A good tool box door is not the easiest to find but they are out there. I found one for mine but maybe do a search for one before you commit. The real hard part is finding one with a key for the lock. They are not easy to get a key for. If the bed you located has a key for the lock your over the biggest hump.

X2 this looks like a solid bed. If you want a steel floor or the toolbox then the swap is not a bad price.

Re: Looking for opinion on bed swap

You’re correct. I would also prefer a metal bed so as not to have to deal with replacing the wood.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am going to buy it and do the swap.

Re: Looking for opinion on bed swap

Does the new bed you are getting come with a tailgate?....Your tailgate looks strait, and would possibly pay for the swap. Rest of the bed looks good also, except for the wood,
some one else will be interested in a bed with a wood floor.

Re: Looking for opinion on bed swap

I will use my current tailgate since the new bed doesn’t come with one. The seller has also offered to do the swap for me.
