Question Grant Challenger Steering Wheels

I am installing a new steering wheel and can't figure out how to hook up the horn. My column is from a 67' or 68'. Here is a pic of my cancel cam. I have 2 questions. First, how does this cam cancel my blinker because it has never worked since owning the truck. Second, how do I get the brass plunger supplied with the kit to make contact with the brass plunger in the column. (The second pic shows they are offset from each other). Thanks

Where is your horn ring/canceller?

There is a plastic piece with a brass ring and 2 notches that cancel the turn signal cam and ride on that brass plunger.

In order, Spring/horn ring/adapter/grant cover/wheel/horn adapter plate/horn cover.

All I can tell you, and it's just my opinion, is that Grant's horn kit is the sorriest piece of crap in the universe!! Oh, and by the way, their customer service department is a mis-named, albeit non-existent entity! Guess what I think about Grant?

Are you talking about this piece? I think these were used on 70' and newer. I hope this is my problem. The black piece in my first pic is called the turn signal cancel cam. I just replaced it tonight with a white one.

I agree grant wheels are the worst at making the horn work right I gave up and put a button under the dash, works great and can't be seen wish I'd done it sooner instead of fussing with the horn crap that came with the wheel! My .02

lol Barn, tell us how you really feel about Grant

I agree with the horn setup. I had to fabricate a spacer, grind the horn ring down a bit and grind a bit off the spacer to get mine to work right. If you go by their kit, it either works (ALL THE TIME and wont shut off) or it doesnt work at all.

It's all in the design of the adapter plate.

I agree about the horn... I don't even bother anymore... I just run an extra button under the dash. I love how the horn button pops lose about once or twice a week also, gives me something to fix.... like I needed more....

All of the steering columns should have the canceller/horn contact. I would not buy a grant wheel but spend your money on an OEM wheel. I have had 4 or 5 so I am experienced with there quirks. I have one of their aluminum/leather wheels with the billet adapter in my 240Z and it is pretty nice, but it is also a different style of canceller than the GM setup. It was also expensiv. The wheel and kit were $175 if I remember correcty ($125 for the wheel and $50 for the kit) There is a 70's camaro 4 spoke wheel that looks nice (also in Vega and Monza) I have one in my Jimmy. It is reasonably sporty and the later ones have a faux weave molded in. (78-81 or so) I would go with the '69 camaro comfort grip wheel with a 68 Camaro install kit (same diameter as truck column, 69 is slightly larger but will work.) The wheel is an inch or so smaller in diameter than the truck wheel. Black rubber grip with 3 polished aluminum spokes. Muscle Factory has the complete kit with new canceller/contact for $150. (or they did) Ricks First Gen, Year One and Classic Camaro (Classic Industries) are also sources but Muscle Factory was cheapest when I bought mine. Nothing like genuine GM parts! (or at least reproductions...) Nice thing about this wheel is it allows good viewing of the instrument panel.

You're right about the part you need. Brass plunger goes into the nipple and contacts the brass on the horn ring, which contacts the brush in your column. The horn ring in my 69 didn't mate properly with the hub in the kit. Had a shoulder on the hub and a shoulder on the horn ring that interfered and the hub wouldn't seat on the steering shaft. Machined off both shoulders and trimmed .2" off the post cover. This could be done with a disk sander or file. The wheel was bought by the p.o., so I made it fit.

Grant adaptor kits can be a pain, but I had a friend show me how to get them in correctly and mine works great. There really is a trick in getting them to work well. It's also hard to explain. Maybe I should do a write up on this also...
