Re: Anyone here into motorcycles??

I've been into bikes my whole life and haven't been without one since I was eleven. Here's some pics from the early years:

Me on my 1974 XR75 - my Dad bought this for my older brother and me to ride. It smoked badly so my Dad put new rings in it over the winter and it was good to go. My brother only ride it once or twice and decided it wasn't for him. After that it was all mine.

Me pulling a wheelie on my XL100. It's pretty much like the one that 67C10Step restored.

My 1975 CB360. I rode this from KY to Myrtle Beach along with a buddy on his bike in 1985. Good times.

1980 Yamaha XT500. I wish I would not have sold this one.

1985 Honda Nighthawk CB650. I worked at a machine shop during summers and made double minimum wage plus a lot of OT so I paid for college and bought this bike. This was back in the mid eighties when college was still affordable.

Re: Anyone here into motorcycles??

I sold the Nighthawk 650 in 1995 and bought the only vehicle that I've ever bought new, a 1995 1200 Sportster. I was single at the time and decided to start taking trips on it so off I went. I've probably been in about 35 states on it. Today it has 102,000 miles on it and still runs about like it did when it was new. I've maintained really well and the only malfunction was a $2.00 spring on the shifter detent mechanism that broke and I easily fixed. It's never failed to start and run well at all times. More reliable (and more simple) than most cars.

I decided to "retire" the Sportster a couple of years ago and just use it for local rides since I didn't want to keep piling up the miles and run it until it failed. I bought a Buell Ulysses which I really liked, until it started running poorly. I poked around on it and couldn't easily figure it out so I called three Harley shops but they wouldn't work on it. Then I called a few independent shops who also said they wouldn't work on it. Finally I figure out what the problem was and fixed it myself but the experience made me leery about owning a bike that no one would work on so I sold it. Back on the '95 Sportster.

Since 1200 Sportster's have treated me well and I like them, I recently bought a used 2006 1200 Sportster with low miles. So far I really like it.

I've always liked the idea of the whole adventure touring type of bike, but most of them are hideous in my eyes (sort of like the Buell). I guess I'll have to get over it and buy one someday. Ideally I'd like a lighter weight bike that can cover some minor off road riding but also chew up highway miles comfortably. Probably doesn't exist. I've actually banged my Sportster around on a number of gravel roads in it's day so maybe I already have what I need?

Re: Anyone here into motorcycles??

The wife really wants a Can Am Spyder but I told her as long as I got two good legs I want to stay on two wheels. Probably best to buy two anyway because she doesn't like riding on the back and I told her my pride just would not let me show up somewhere and have folks see me getting off the back with here driving.

Last two wheeler I had was a Kawasaki sport bike and I loved that machine. Not sure what I would get these days if I was seriously looking.

Re: Anyone here into motorcycles??

The cruiser scene isn't my thing. I did own two different Concours and rode the wheels off them. They started giving me little problems about 65,000 miles so I sold them and bought a BMW R1100S. I had no idea how unreliable that bike would be. Every known issue I've had. I think I have everything straighten out on it now. The R1200GS has been a good bike. Very little trouble with it although there's like three open recalls on it I need to have fixed.

Paint that thing blue and you got what started me on two wheels. Rode that thing a few months and I guess my dad saw the gleam in my eye when I was on it and bought me a 1969 Honda Z50. It was definitely an upgrade.

Re: Anyone here into motorcycles??

Ventured into the motorcycle world years ago when I purchased a used 1952 Harley "K" model. Was back about late '72. Wife and I had been married just over a year. Must have been going for the outlaw biker look in my younger days, LOL. Extended front fork, no front brake, peanut tank, Z-bars, King / Queen seat, drag pipes, kick start. No speedometer but on two wheels it sure felt like you were hauling a**. Never laid it down but had a close call or two. A buddy and I were running the inter-state one time when a semi passed us and he was pushing some wind for sure. We were side by side when he passed and the breeze pushed us within a few inches of each other at turn pike speeds. Last time we ever rode side by side. Wife was pregnant with oldest son, last time she rode with me she was just over 7 months. Needed a truck for work, couldn't afford having a car, motorcycle, a truck and a baby on the way. Bike had to go, The one and only and still miss that ol flat head.

PGSigns, sending you a PM, totally off subject but have some questions for you.

Re: Anyone here into motorcycles??

Those old K Model Harleys were a special bike. I'd love to get one. Predecessor to the Sportster. I'd like one set up for flat track and do the vintage race circuit.

You might enjoy seeing this one (like I sure do)

I've always had bikes, 1st one was a Rokon Trailbreaker (my stepdad was a dealer). My 2nd was a '78 Yamaha SR500 (75,000 miles), 3rd was a '78 Honda CB750 (110,000 miles), 4th was a '81 Honda CB900F (90,000 Miles), 5th '84 Honda VT500 Ascot (95,000 miles). I used to commute everyday rain or shine!!! I loved riding! Now I don't have anything to ride.

I never even knew of such model. That would be a great bike for bombing around on. Super cool!

That's a great pic. I was into supermoto riding for a few years and really had a blast at several track days. After that I bought a Harley Ultra Classic to try and slow down and enjoy a more chilled out riding experience. It feels like I'm riding a sofa down the interstate... I have always owned dirt bikes and still ride those the most. Current bike is a 2015 Yamaha YZ250FX, fuel injected 6 speed and electric start. Its a great bike. Now I'm wanting to try an electric dirt bike, like maybe the Segway (Sur Ron) 260. Even though it will be less power, it's also less than half the weight so I'm thinking it would be a ton of flickable fun.

At Motorsport Ranch in Cresson Tx. the track photographer snapped some great pics of me draggin' a knee on my DRZ SM. I'll see if I can find them to post here.
