new member...general question 1984 k10 4x4

hello, ive got a 1984 k10 4x4 with a 350, im currently deployed with the usmc, ive been buying parts for it while ive been gone, so far ive bought a new radio, headers, 35/12.5 bfg mud terrains, and a four inch rough country lift, and new carpet and underlay, i live in north carolina and was wondering if i need catalytic converters seeings how its a 1984 and dont require emmisions, i was wondering what a good muffler is? right now im looking at flowtech afterburners, they have a good price and good reviews. im goin to be going with 3 inch all the way back. im just looking for ideas and maybe websites to find cool stuff for my truck, its kinda hard to find certain things like brush guards bumpers etc...just looking for ideas that wont break my bank anymore than i already have lol

and does anyone know if i can put a bigger gas tank on this truck?? it is a shortbed and this 16 gallon tank is killing me every other day i gotta fill up

Re: new member...general question 1984 k10 4x4

Maybe look into the blazer rear tank swap or add a 2nd tank on the other side which would reuqire a filler hole.

As for parts try ebay, lmc, and jcwhitney, they have things like brushguards and such.

If you don't have inspection, not even visual then you should be ok without them. We don't have sniffer tests but they do visually inspect the vehicle to see if one is in place.

As for muffler that's good price and cheap I'd look into a cherry bomb extreme or the thrush welded ones.

Re: new member...general question 1984 k10 4x4

Mufflers are just personal preference. Flowmasters are of course the most popular now for some reason, but to each their own on that. I'd really reconsider the 3" exhaust, the truck would run better with a 2.5" pipe. You have to make sure to create the proper back pressure and not let it be so open. Others will chime in that know a ton more than I do, hopefully.

As far as gas tanks, you have a few options. You can put the other saddle tank on and wire it up with a switch like the factory twin tank setup, giving you two 16 gallon tanks. Or your other option is putting a suburban/blazer gas tank between the rear frame rails. This would give you the option of a single 25 or 31 gallon tank. Your short bed can not use the big 40 gallon suburban tank though, too long.

Hope any of that helps you, and thank you for your service in the USMC, and be careful so you can come home and finish the truck!

hey thanks man, ive looked at a bunch of those websites, cant currently look at ebay...which sucks cause that is a awsome place to find parts, does the blazer have the same frame as the swb chevy's? i think i remember those being around 30 gallons. that would be perfect since it is my daily driver.

Re: new member...general question 1984 k10 4x4

hey randy,

thanks for the info, i think thats what im going to get as far as the tank is concerned, with the pipes i plan on putting a powerful 350 in it, i like how the 3 inch pipes sound, right now ive got 2 inch duals on it and it is super restricted. with the gas tank, do i got to just get everything for the 31 gallon tank? ie straps fuel pump, filler neck?

the bigger tank for a blazer requires some work it's not just a bolt in deal.

Another good site with good stuff on it. Also cruising some of the build threads for the 73-87's will put lots of ideas in your head and give you helpful insight on stuff.

Yeah.... ditch the 350 and drop a 5.3L or a 6.0L in there. 300-400 HP and you can go a full week on that 16 gallon tank without looking at a gas station!

Be sure to throw up some pics when you can. Don't forget Craigslist for parts too, as well as our board sponsors. And thanks for your service!!

Re: new member...general question 1984 k10 4x4

ive seen alot of guys doing that, the thing is is that i dont make a whole lot of money and dont have the money for the computer systems and sensors etc...a good 350 i can get for under a thousand, maybe years down the road i may do that, but for right now im just gonna stick with a carb. but when i do i think id go with a 6.0...lots of power with those. any other ideas? suspension interior body? im open to all ideas lol

Same with mine. All the trucks that were exempt from emissions from the factory just had a normal fuel gauge, not one with "Unleaded Fuel Only." Mine should be exempt, but I guess it's not somehow. The older gentleman at the exhaust shop told me that unless he was putting a catalytic converter he wasn't technically allowed to do it. He then told me that if I left it overnight he and his co-worker would do it for $50 less than full price (and under the radar) before work. It was a good decision
