Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

FMCustomz - I have a few f100s and a couple crown vics, Im hoping to find somebody that can do the swap on the running gear and motor/transmissions. Is this something you would be interested in? Im just outside of Modesto, so Morgan Hill isnt too far for me.

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

Just FYI you can cut 5" out of the center of the crown vic K member and a 79 mustang rack will bolt right back up so you dont have to cut the crown vic rack, this is one my friend in Alabama done

FM Custom, how mush fabrication was involved? Did you have to cut a lot of the frame? Make any brackets?

Once again I am curious as why anyone would use the C/V IFS when the 73-87 IFS is a bolt in.

Well for me seemed more inexpensive to get the IRS rack and pinion in one shot. After market for the same is in the $2000 range. Also I have a ford wheel in mind that I want to run, (it is not available in a chevy pattern).

For one thing the suspension geometry and brakes are better with the Crown Vic. and it is a complete package

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

I do not feel the suspension geometry is better then a modified cross member having riden in both. The brakes are taller and thinner vs the heavier 1/2 ton. So better is likely negligible. Big brake kits with SRT8 parts are easy which is only really plus. Converting drum spindles gets complicated on alignment.

The rack is a plus but factory setting suck. So a rebuild is in order.

For a Ford I wouldn't hesitate to do one, bit on a Chevy I would like use Jag parts. Forgive me Ireland. The jag handles awesome takes junkyard big brake kits just as easy, an is steel so fabrication is easier.

Forgot to mention the rear A-arm mount sits pretty far back causing issues with a frame section, and the cross member hangs low.

The jag has better after market support. Forgive me Ireland. Plus a whole car is easier to get for less then a 1000, an you can. Have IRS too.

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

Hi guys, check this out. http://stockton.craigslist.org/pts/4781441509.html Not trying to step on anyone's toes. I've thought about this too but in the end I'm a 6 lug type of guy.

What I really want to do is set my 70 SWB on a 2000 + chassis. Has anyone on here done this ? If so please share a link if you have one : )

My OG chassis is done in por-15, cross member is powder coated and CPP tubular control arms are ready to be installed. Ohh and some ece dropped spindles and springs.

I'm doing a poor mans build, at the rate I'm going it would be best to just get a rolled over truck with everything on it.

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

The frames are to different and the body almost has to be chanelled over the frame. Which is a lot of work.

Maybe for a lifted truck a slight body lift wouldn't be noticeable, but for a dropped truck it would be to much.

Guys have done it with the gmt-400 trucks which are closer to our trucks bit still way different.

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

Thank you Ziegelsteinfaust, 3 or 4 years ago I seen a guy do it on a "forum" not sure if it was here. I've searched foogle long and wide for his post and nothing. I would like to use that guys swap as a guide. If I remember correctly he was somewhat detailed about how he did the swap. PLEASE if anyone out there knows about that truck (it was yellow) please let me know. It was also a 2 wheel drive Ziegelsteinfaust, the money shot lies here, I don't remember if it looked funny or not If anyone else has done it please share the link : ) Thx

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

I have seen the gmt400 swap and it looked awesome, but for the amount of work I could of done 2 square body's laying frame. It is all how you do the sheet metal and you better have the skills.

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

If you are just looking to run the 5x4.75 bolt pattern you could run a 91 Camaro 1LE rotor and use the trucks bearings and brake. it is supposed to give you the smaller bolt pattern with just changing your rotors.

this is of course for the 81-87 front ends. but would be an easier option to swap in a newer crossmember and just run different rotors.

Doesnt that option require the light duty brake option or spindles/rotors

Or use 1.25" HD spindles/rotors/brakes & re-drill the rotors to the car pattern.

In my eyes, that seems like a long troublesome road to go down, just to fit a style of wheels?

There are so many options for these trucks and even if you couldn't find what you liked, I would have to think that you could get custom wheels for not much more than what it would cost you for the conversion.

Sometimes spending a few dollars more in the beginning, is cheaper in the longrun

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

You can do the CV swap for about the $500 if there is nothing that needs to be replaced. Doing the work yourself.

If you find one at pick a part your south of $300, but the effort may not be worth it.

Still my preference is for mods to the stock cross member or jag swap. I have a CV under my F100 project, and I wish I did jag. It would of been easier to go lower, and easier to fab in the cross member.

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

To comment on a couple things reading through the thread,
The crown vic/grand marquis weighs just as much as your truck if you put somebody in all the seats, so strength isn't going to be an issue. My grand marquis crosses the scales at 4150 pounds with me in it and my usual trunk load.

The rack and pinion steering is 2003MY and up.

Brakes are virtually the same size as the stock truck brakes, ~12" diameter. 4 piston calipers. The pre '95/watts link cvgm is rated to tow 5000 pounds with smaller brakes. I wouldn't be concerned about stopping ability.

Front springs: if it comes from a cop car, you have 1050lb/in springs--inline with the truck extra HD front coil springs. Passenger cars are significantly more forgiving. Can dig out the numbers if anybody wants.

Alex.

Re: Crown Vic front end on a 67-72?

after the did the conversion I had to swap out the p71 coils for the standard crown vic coils. I think they are 700lb springs if I remember right and also I made adapter mounting plates so the system is bolt on to stock uncut frame
