Wiped a lobe.

My cam is shot. All stock 1972 c10 350 as far as I know. I haven't torn it down yet. I'm looking at the 2102 edelbrock performer plus cam kit.
Anyone else use this? Is it compatible with the stock heads-springs? Thanks in advance for any advice.

This cam works well with stock heads. It’s been a very long time ago, but I ran this cam In A 350 with an edelbrock intake and stock springs. It ran well with good low end torque.

If you wiped a cam, don’t waste your money on any new cam.
You need to tear it down and hot tank it and replace all the bearings.
All that fine cam lobe metal is now all through your motor.
Or flip a coin, take a chance, put the new kit in, spend a grand, enjoy it awhile until it all comes grinding to a halt again.

Yeah, agree, if you wiped a lobe, that material went down into your oil system as very fine particles over the time it took to wipe the lobe. Doesn't really matter how long it took, it's those particles embedding into the bearings and being inside every nook of your oiling system that is worrisome. Imagine fine metal shavings in your oil!

If you have the cam card, it should reflect the required spring specifications.

Some quick poking around reveals this information...

NSTALLATION NOTES:
Do not use late model timing sets. They are machined in a retarded position and are not recommended for this camshaft installation. Use Performer-Link Timing Chain Gear Set 350-7800 or similar set.
Use only stock or Edelbrock Springs 350-5802 or 350-5902 (for rotators).
Use only with stock 1.5 rocker arm ratio

For the effort of a full rebuild I would just get a roller block and be done with wiped lobes. Be miles ahead of the performance game too with just some stock vortec heads and intake.

I agree. Get yourself an L31 crate motor and get Vortec heads, a roller cam, 1-piece rear main seal, and a 1-piece pan gasket. You'll need an intake, mellonized distributor gear, and an electric fuel pump, but you'll probably still save money and have a much better engine.

To Jesse. I'm not doing a full rebuild yet. You must have mistaken someone else's post as mine.

To CUDA8U. This is a daily driver. I can't go all out and build 500hp toy.

To weq and geezer. I definitely see your point on that lobe went somewhere.lol. Cams have been changed out after wiping lobes without encountering new problems. I do understand its iffy though. The cam is 168 plus the cost of gaskets so it wouldn't be a grand. Doing the swap myself of course.

I've thought about new engines,383ht,building a 383.going with a 400sb,Rebuilding my 350. After all the thought and research I've even though of just a stock rebuild and be done with it. It's an overwhelming task deciding what to do. I've already got a 700r4 tranny installed. I haven't taken the pan off the rear end yet but will wind up with 373s one way or another.

This is a daily driver. I'd love 25 mpg but I know that won't happen. I'd love a 454 but don't want 6-8 mpg either. It's hard to find a happy medium. I'm looking for a good efficient engine to build and opinions are definitely wanted. I'll be driving this truck all over the nation as I already have.

I lost a lobe on a Corvair engine. I completely tore the engine down, found metal particles all thru the engine/oil passages.

Thanks truckster and cleszkie. L31 looks decent. Will it run on 87 octane being 9.4 to 1 compression. 91 or 93 wouldn't kill me though. Also will all my brackets such as ac,starter,alternator ect bolt on or would that turn into a headache?

Is anyone running this engine? If so what's the milage like? 700r4, 255 70 15 inch tires with 373? Gears here.

I have been running one a couple years now. It's not a daily driver but I drive it every weekend when ever I get a chance during the week. All your brackets will work but you need a vortec intake Summit has them for around $150. You also need a melonized distributor gear, electric fuel pump(which almost killed the deal for me, glad it didn't). You also need a flexplate for a one piece rear main seal.
I don't know the exact gas mileage I'm getting but I can tell you it's way better than my old motor. I estimate it to be between 15 and 20 mpg if I drive it right but that never happens ,lol.
There was a post on here the other day where someone found the L31 crate motor for around $1700 or close to that. I paid $2000 and I'm happy with mine.

For what it is worth, of course a full forged everything, roller cam, roller rocker, fuel injected eta... engine is the BEST way to go.
But I've seen multiple small blocks with flat cam survive for years with a cam, lifter, timing set swap.
30 years ago I had to do just the cam lifter timing set on a 74 350 in a Blazer due to very little money. I drove it 5 more years and another 91000 miles, for a total of 266,000.
God smiled on my little family when I was down, so it is possible. If you have no other choice.

Thanks for the info gvw. I'll probably change the cam out and get some more miles out of this one.

I'm thinking about pulling the distributor and priming it with a few diesel fuel washes to remove most of the shavings that aren't embedded in bearings. Use a drill as you'd do to prime a rebuild.

tons of 305's lost cam lobes back in the day an no one rebuilt them....unless the oil filter clogged so bad it opened the bypass the metal should not have made it to the bearings

Your definitely rolling the dice, but its your game. the L31 is the best bang for your money. I'm running one in my C30. Upgraded the CAM, holly Carb on high rise intake, electronic ignition, 2 1/4 " manifolds /dual. Pulls like a mule and runs like champ on the road.
