Two bed crossmembers. Added plates for strength and support.

Here is a pictures of the cross bed rails being cut. The 2" tube was fitted and welded.

Re: Hidden Hitch for 73-87's?

Yes, all trucks have the rectangle tube. The crossmember is one of two crossmembers. The two crossmembers are where Blazer tanks are sandwiched. Since I installed a tube receiver, I can't install a Blazer tank. You should see the hitch!!

Thanks for the compliments. 355+ HP is fun to drive!! I'll let the board attendees on the 13th tell ya more about it!

Re: Hidden Hitch for 73-87's?

Here is my custom hitch.

I ordered a 16" long 2" tube from www.jcwhitney.com. A 1/4" steel plate was added. The plate protects my roll pan.

Do you have a part number? I did a search and talked with a JC rep with no luck finding one. The local trailer supply folks said they don't carry them any longer due to liability issues.

Re: Hidden Hitch for 73-87's?

I had to get number from an old catalogue. Newer catalogues don't list it anymore. Let me see if I can find that old catalogue around my desk.

Yes, the welded tube goes right down the middle. It is welded to the first bar and second bar near the axel. Added plates used for strength. I'm removing the bed later this Spring. I'll snap picutures of the install.

Re: Hidden Hitch for 73-87's?

I've put maybe 1500 lbs on it. The guy who installed it has one on a 87. He's towed a trailer with a truck on it! He's even towed a tractor on a trailer. The bars are riveted, I think. I plan some welding to strengthen the bars. Extra braces will be installed when the bed is off. Next time the weather is nice, I'll snap a few pictures.

Re: Hidden Hitch for 73-87's?

what about pulling one of those hitches from the junk yard and cut it to fit between the frame rails wont that work too? I think this is a good idea cause i hate the way the hitches look hanging under the bumper specially on a lowered truck.

Re: Hidden Hitch for 73-87's?

That is my plan.
I have one from a burb and one from a truck. I'm just going to cut, weld, and reinforce my own hidden hitch. I think someone makes a weld together kit for a hide a hitch. I'll have to do some looking.

That is what I did. Fits nicely behind the license plate on the roll pan. It has been TESTED and works fine.

Re: Hidden Hitch for 73-87's?

Found this video of a nice setup. Unfortunately the person who uploaded it is not the owner. Maybe the owner is a member here? I would be happy with a hitch setup like this and a rollpan.

1:16-1:20 gives a good view
