How to retain original looking paint

I'm in the process of restoring my 1972 k20 4X4, The original color was Willow Green. I'm not interested in a 'Rat Truck", rather I want a truck I can still use as a ranch truck and at the same time be proud of her looks and keep her from rusting away. Any ideas are welcome and I hope this is not a stupid question.

Sincerest Thanks as always,

John

Not a stupid question at all. Here's a thought, but verify before you try it. Go over the hood and any other surface-rusted areas with CLR and a scotch brite pad. It should remove the worst of the rust and leave a nice patina. Then clear coat the truck to keep it from rusting any more. Pretty sure this has been covered in threads here already -- a search might find more info. If I run across it I'll post a link.

Edit: Here's what I was thinking of http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=447159 There are more pics. I just had to post this one.

If you try this on your truck take some before and aft pics and post them on here. I forgot about that CLR thing and I just bought a truck with lots of surface rust so I'm gonna try it too.

Re: How to retain original looking paint

My sincerest thanks to both of you. I love the CLR & clear coat idea. Hopefully I can get a mat finish versus glossy

Pardon my ignorance, Stocker, but which is the side with product applied? If it's the patch on camera right, I'm not interested, but if it's the blue paint coming up on camera left, then that might be a nice effect.

Product has been applied to the left (blue) side.

Re: How to retain original looking paint

Not sure a wax/buff would work for you but it sure brought the OEM paint back to life on the GMC I recently purchased (more pics here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=6804897)

Thanks for the clarification. I wonder if a good waxing on top of the CLR treatment would work?
