Re: 1973 K20 Build Thread

I will catch up the thread with the lift install, brake lines, frame painting etc. later. I'm just fired up now that I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel...

Re: 1973 K20 Build Thread

Thanks so much, guys. I got a little more done today. I ground off the rivets that hold the E-brake cables to the frame. I'm going to have to fab something up to lower them. Pics on that later. Steering was also loose so I got a new (reman) steering box.

On a bad note, I broke a grease fitting from one of the new tie rods! The threads broke inside the tie rod flush.

So now I have to figure out something, maybe tap it out somehow. At least I had already greased it up, and it will work fine. Worst case I'll just go and get another tie rod.

Re: 1973 K20 Build Thread

Cracking refurb, man! I'm a great fan of fun driveway tinkering like this, without dismantling everything and doing a frame up. I really like the detail you've gone into and it'll make it easier for me when I replace my leaking hubs.

About to get a Rough Country 4" lift for my 69 {yeh!}, so I'm looking forward to your write up.

Re: 1973 K20 Build Thread

Thanks for the kind words, folks.

In a weird way I wanted to challenge myself doing it all in my driveway with no air compressor and just run of the mill hand tools. The toughest part so far was installing the rear wheel studs with the 1/2 inch wrench and hydraulic jack handle "breaker bar". Took me a long time and I was forced to do it in 100+ degree weather.

I'm not going to worry about the body work for now, just going to enjoy it for a bit. I might do the bodywork when the kids are a little older, but I don't want to have to worry about having a pretty truck staying out in the driveway.

I love this truck more everytime I read it. It looks great just like that. I wouldn't even mess with the body.

I just sanded the ones it had with 220 and sprayed them with Rustoleum white. They cleaned up very nicely. I had to find another wheel, too, because one was pretty bent up. They are actually Ford wheels.

Re: 1973 K20 Build Thread

Enjoyed going through your thread. You must have "been there done that" once or twice before. Just finished doing front and rear brakes, wheel bearings, etc. on my "new" 78 GMC K15 and didn't even occur to me to do ball joints and inner axle seals while I had it apart I'm sure I'll be pulling the front back apart in the near future. Can't wait to see your lift kit "how to" as I've got a 4 inch spring lift on its way also! Thanks for all the detail!

Ball joints on yours will be exactly like my front end. I'll post the write-up on the lift soon, I just haven't gotten around to it. You'd better start spraying all the nuts and bolts with some PB Blaster, though.
