Brand loyalty in a different way

Is it just me or do others agree that a chevy should have chevy parts and Ford should have Ford parts and i'll go a bit further, I think a 67-72 Chevy truck should sport their original parts, not to rule out aftermarket parts but made for that year and that vehicle. Putting camaro front clips on C-10's or Mustang IFS on CHEVY'S or cadillac parts ect..ect. to me just rubs a bit uncomfortably. IMHO. I haven't been in this hobby / or love affair for that long and maybe i'm missing something but a Ford truck sportin a 350 is just wrong. or maybe it me. I was thinking of putting Cobra wheels on my truck but i had to remind myself of my own stance.

Honestly, from a guy that is into retrofitting whatever into whatever, my take on it is this:

If you want it, do it.
If it fits or you can make it fit, go for it.
If it's gonna run smoother or go faster, why not?
If it looks better to you, and you like it, who cares what anyone else says?

I do agree that GM and Ford should still sell old replacement parts, body panels, crap like that ... but we always have eBay to get NOS parts and board vendors to get repops The hard time finding the parts makes it that much more fun.

Now, I kinda agree... Although,... GM parts are GM parts.... I put '92 Chevy truck spindles on my "68.... I'd use Caddy parts if they benefitted my purpose. And...
A Ford 9" rearend,... hell, that goes into anything... But, only the 9" rearends. No other Ford parts, ever belong on our trucks...

this thread is just asking for trouble.

you simply have to rember this:

if it's your truck you can do whatever you want to it. others are going to do the same. you may not like what they do to there trucks but it's there truck NOT yours.

The bling rims and slammed trucks start to look alike after a while (especially since most of them put a 67 clip on the truck no matter what year it is ) but I'm also not a huge fan of 100% stock trucks. BUT I can appreciate the work that went into each of them and both styles make for a great truck. I'm somewhere in the middle, modern drivetrain and suspension components with a stock outside appearance.

Don't know if you know or not, but new ford and gm trucks now share a transmission For the life of me I can't remember which it was, but they do. Also, the same plant that makes trannys for Tacoma's makes them for Colorados too.

I guess i was hoping for more than "hey its my truck and i'll do what i want" yea i get that but come on doesn't it bother you when at a car show you peer into the engine bay of a 55 T-bird and you see a 350? isn't that the easy way out? I know Ford makes some nice stuff i think it should re-main all Ford and Vice a versa. I agree anyone can do what they want with their rides but call me a purist i guess.


My business puts me in and out of all GM, DCX (Chrysler) and Ford plants on a monthly basis I've been in 74 auto plants throught N. AMerica. Our hammers are used on every one of their assembly plants and Drivetrain. I guess seeing it first hand makes me feel different about the subject.

every one on this forum is an artist! and i guess artists have total liberty of what they create but can't an artist make the best of what the original artists (OEM's) started out with? is GM's front suspension so bad that you are better off with a Ford mustangs? If so, then i have a lot to learn.

Sometimes people just want to be different. GM made something like 5 million Chevy/GMC trucks from 67-72.... why should they all be the same

I've gotten asked by A LOT of people if I was going to drop my truck. I smile and say, nope, I like it just the way it is That doesn't mean I'll never do it, but for now, I like her how she is.

My Opinion
I like the looks of classic cars and trucks. Clean 'em up a little. Maybe remove some trim, but mostly leave them classic look'n.

Inside that package is a whole other story. If you build a classic looking vehicle, and you want to put a modern drivetrain underneath. Go for it. I wish I had the cash and know-how to do it. More power to you.

My truck will stay stock, and will be worked like it was when the first farmer bought it 40 years ago. It would be nice if it had A/C, cruise, power everything, but then I probably wouldn't know how to or be able to afford to work on it.

no no i believe in updating, upgrading, and upstaging your GM or Ford or Dodge or whatever it is you love. Hell yea mine is going to have modern day componants and it will be much better than GM made it originally, I hope, but it will be all 1969 chevrolet. So slam it, raise it, extend it, put NOS in it, paint it heavy metalic copper but put a mustang suspension or corvette rear end? no not for me, but thats just me, dont me too much.

Say what you will, but for years I ran around in a Pro-Street Chevy Luv that I built myself. Small block CHEVY engine, narrowed DODGE 8 3/4 rearend, FORD LTD radiator and hell, the truck itself was made in Japan by ISUZU!

I rather lean towards keeping the rarities fairly pure and having fun with the rest.

I think there is a point to be made for preservation and a point to be made for being creative. I, for instance, wouldn't make a lot of radical changes to a 63 split window Corvette, but I wouldn't hesitate to do anything and everything to an 83 Chevette.

(Don't giggle too hard.. saw a pro-street Chevette sporting a rat on the road about a month ago.)

M y two ton heap would have died as a pile of rust on a farm if I hadn't rescued it -- what am I taking away from the world if I tear it down, put a C4 front member and 4 link rear into it?

in a nut shell, ford - ford chevy - chevy and to go one step further... 67-72 chevy c-10 - 67-72 chevy c-10. and do whatever you want with it.

Is an after market "Mustang II" IFS or 9" Rear made with no Ford components really still "Ford". How about a "SBC" made with nothing from GM (not even the block), is it really a SBC? These are rhetorical questions BTW.

i'm a gm guy at heart allthough i owned mostly gm opel .
i actually like the bodystyle of the fords but i dislike there engines i wouldnt hessitate to put a chevy in a ford if it would be my car .
i used to read alot about the old streetrods these oldtimers used watever was available and i think nottin spells hotrod more than a personal car made out of wat you like in a car .
they do this a lot in england realy tiny ford populair bodywork with rover(buick) engines vauxhall independant frontend and jaguar rears ( now for sumtin totaly different and trust me they make some weird things in england , i've seen a reliand three wheeled car undercarrage under a speedboat long before monster garage did one , besides this was a deep v hull that was sitting the good way up , and its roadlegal they thought of putting a simulair frame under a caravan (can you immagine the looks of the other roadusers when its overtaking in the far lane ?)
or a twice chopped double decker bus as a camper for cluboutings ..... howbout a 4 post bed with a licenceplate a lazychair with a moped engine , a outhouse with (turbo)jetpropulsion (i am not kidding allthough its not legal to drive it on the road thank god ) i mean i wouldn't want to miss seeing stuff like that on the internet nowaday's, it boils up the creative juices or makes you wonder wat brand of beer had sprung that one idea .

idea's for the trucks and the order of things to do are taking shape and get closer to being realized , a few more months and i be able to start building for real

i complete 2 of the trucks intoo running fashion one custom and one basicly stock the thirth will be sacrificed for parts

I live in Japan for 10 years and owned a 55 Chevy while I was there. I used whatever I could find, GM, Ford, Dodge, Mazda, Nissan, etc...whatever I could find and make work I did. But that's what Hot Rodding is about. I love my truck, but I love allot of other vehicles too. I'll mess with them all, keep some sorta stock, others who knows. Whatever gets my interest and my blood a pump.

although i may not necessarily agree with mixmatching i do understand its necessity of olden days and places outside of the US where parts are a scarce comodity. But in todays world of aftermarket parts catalogues, the internet and ebay i fail to see the need to hodgepodge. but nonetheless, it made for an interesting thread of conversation and i enjoyed reading it. thanks for the edumacation.

yea i get that but they're not the subject of my focus... i've been studying a new IFS for my C-10, and the cheapest way for me to go is to keep it stock, clean out the crud and keep it simply stock. i probably won't do this but when it comes down to the dimes of it, cheaper is stickin with what you already have. I'm mean i would love the new Heidts all tubular IFS for my truck but i can't seem to wrap my mind around spending 2,500 for it and none of it is GM OEM. This is not about money, this is about keeping a blood line pure and is it that important afterall.
