Lol very true. Yes oil is 100x better quality than it was 40 years ago. I would never run the crap they recommend in old service manuals.

The oil requirement for these old engines was partly due to these lifters.

The oil requirement for todays engines is different mainly because of these two items.

Different oil for different requirements.

Yesterdays engines called for 30w or 10w30. Many of todays engines call for 5w20 and some people unwittingly use 20w50 in everything they touch.

anyone else old enough to remember pulling a valvecover and everything buried under 1/4 inch of sludge? and having to ream out oil drainback holes so the valve covers wouldn't fill up with oil (318 mopars were notorious)and starve the pickup? thank god for detergent oil!

Flat tappet lifter need high zink which most oil today doesn't have. you'll need to use a addative or I use valveoline vr1 20w 50 it has high zink. the new oil will wear a cam and lifters that came in the older engines

I believe you. Don't know how long you've been on the forum, but I don't think I'm exagerating to say that what oil to use has been one of the most hotly debated topics of discussion. That's where the religion/politics comments prolly came from.

So, I think you just kinda inadvertently "stepped into it" with that title thread.

But you are right, that is a cool pic. I'm bummed because I lost my original dipstick years ago (how the heck do you loose a dipstick anyway?!) At the time, the only one the parts store had was a cheesy CHROME one. Talk about insult to injury.......I still have it btw!

I use Amsoil Z-rod 10w30 synthetic it is designed for older flat tappet cam engines, I use it in my 2 350's and my 396 it has a high zinc concentrate, read about it at www.amsoil.com

If you are running a flat tappet cam--you can and should(?) run a higher zinc content than can be found in most oils. I say Most---- I have switched oils in my older cars to quaker state Defy.(higher zinc content) Its been out a year or so now---reviews seem pretty good.
