Re: Part time job ideas

I actually applied and took the GW test a few weeks back and did pretty well on it. I’m probably too old to get an interview but we’ll see.

Good luck John. That would be a dream job for me.

Doing something for the greater good that is and still being able to eat.

Often thought about Coast Guard too as I pretty much grew up outside the Gate on the water. Growing up, the Potato Patch was where we spent our weekends.

Always wonder if they're looking for the "older more experienced" guys or do I need a degree in some obscure science?

Like I said.... Closing in on it..

Thanks Chris. We'll see. It's a long shot at my age but I'm looking for a change so it's a 'why not' thing. Coast Guard would be a lot more fun. No snakes!

Well, this just sucks!

I was doing some searching online and trying to find some more recent stuff about this guy and his boat, and then I find out that they lost Bertie last year in a storm off the coast of NJ. He and his wife* were rescued by the CG, but their home of 40 years and everything they owned sank in the Atlantic.

Well, probably no one here is interested in these folks, but here is part 1 of 3 video from better days:

Ironically, he served in the CG for 4 years and then decades later the CG saves his life and that of his wife.

Re: Part time job ideas

Today I did something I have never done in my 60 years on the planet. I applied for a job.

As a kid the two gas station jobs I got via word of mouth. Worked at a restaurant that belonged to long time family friends. Got in the copier business (40 years) through my dad.

Been slumming around since mid Dec, thought about a lot of the job ideas in this thread. I was at Lowes (1 mile from my house) the other day and they are looking for seasonal part and full time help. Hmmm … I looked in to it and they have times available that would work awesome for me. It was pretty simple considering all I had to do was go online and fill out the forms.

Should be interesting, but hey its been almost an hour why haven't they called me yet?

LOL, this is a whole new experience … If this doesn't work out I might just go ahead and apply for other jobs haha. I have gone to a couple of job fairs in the last couple of months so you never know.

I lived less than a mile from a Lowes when I was in So.Cal. and when I retired I thought it would be cool to work there. Then I realized that the hardest work that I was doing was hiring a gardener to do my yard work. Probably wouldn't work.

Good luck. Better you than me. If someone says work to me it's like yelling FIRE! I run the other way.

Re: Part time job ideas

Best of luck on the application Mark!

I often talk to two of the guys that work the electrical aisle at the home depot that I frequent. One is a self described "displaced" electrician and the other a retired contractor. Both of them appear to be having a little bit of fun at it and making a couple of bucks. The displaced electrician complains a fair bit but we have some fun conversations when Im there. Besides, who's ever met an electrician that didn't complain about something or other?

Again, best of luck finding your part time gig!

I worked in the IT support business for 35 years even worked for Mark Cuban in the 80's Seen alot of folk's make big money over the years
They don't seem to be very happy now
I got out of the business at 60 years old
Went to work for Home Depot part time 20 to 30 hours a week and volunteer at a couple of local craft brewerys on packaging day's
Some pay volunteers others don't but it keeps the fridge stocked with fresh beer
I have been doing this for 5 years and it seems to be a good balance for me
Keep in mind I am not married have no kids no pets and no credit cards and house is paid for

Re: Part time job ideas

Going in today for an interview at Lowes. My wife just left for work and told me to make sure I don't go in with the know it all old man attitude .. LOL!

When I applied online I had to give my work and education history. What position I was applying for. All the stuff I would put in a resumé.

She said you might want to have a something to hand the interviewer, maybe a short resumé? I told her he should already have the one I did online for them. She looked at me … There is that old man attitude I was talking about.

I did a search for basic templates online. Geeze even the very basic ones have way more than someone looking to get a part time seasonal job needs.

Ive already talked to a few of my old customers that have told me I could work for them full time. But I really would like to have part time work only and close to home. Especially through spring and summer. Lets see what happens today and Ill go from there.

Thanks you my friend! I did get the job, woohoo! Going to be an interesting chapter of my life. Course I have to pass the drug test and the background check. Since Ive never done an illegal drug in my life, non drinker, non smoker, and Im cleared to work on copiers in the state pen in areas where the inmates roam free. I feel like Im good.

Not sure on my hours yet, but I do know if I end up working days and not overnites (sounds like what he wants of me) Ill be working 5am to 2pm. With only a one mile commute. Ill get in a lot of time with my grandkids and grand niece and nephew. Also check on my pop. I actually would have had to turn it down if it went past 2pm due to family commitments.

Re: Part time job ideas

Its only a four month gig, but Im happy to try out something Ive never done before. The manager that interviewed me said its not uncommon for people to stay on or move to different positions within the store.

I have no idea what's going to happen after the four months. I think finding a job after the four months thats entirely different might be fun.

As far as the discount every family member and friend that I have told about this has asked about that haha! I just tell them Im in but I cant promise anything until I actually get my lil red vest =)

Congratulations Mark. You might really like it. And you know what they say. "If you like your job. It's not work"

Just as a post script. I've hired a lot of people in my day. And I knew you were going to get that job.

Re: Part time job ideas

Up date! Today is my two year anniversary of my official start date at Lowes. The first five or six months I was seasonal. I worked in receiving. Learned how to drive a forklift and eventually was qualified for all the power equipment they use inside and outside the store. All stuff I had never done before. Unloading the semis that came in with lumber and other heavy tippy stuff was a little nerve wracking at first.

At the end of my seasonal I was kind of bummed because I actually liked the job. It was full time. I started at 5 am and was off at 2. With a one mile commute it was gravy compared to the many many hours I spent on the road at my old career.

They could have put me in the regular red vest rotation instead of receiving, but I would have had to work all the weird hours other retail folks have to work. No thanks.

A job with the MST part of Lowe's opened up, full time, same hours I was working (no weekends), full benefits since it wasn't seasonal. Ive posted pictures of the things the MST crew does here on the board. We do all seasonal resets, resets that none of us can figure out why they are doing this? haha. Etc etc.

I didnt go in wanting full time, but the hours and distance from home made it oK. This whole gig was very new to me, I actually enjoy it. We dont make crap for salary, but when you come from the tip top of the scale (no Im not rich haha) after 40 years in one profession, to the very bottom of the scale total newbie I didnt expect much and was perfectly happy with what they offered

My honey said she is tossing in the towel permanently at the end of this year, so Ill be calling it quits too. Overall it was a pretty good experience. Lowes is a decent company as far as I can tell. Never having worked retail though I have little experience to compare
