Winchester 94 --Rolls Royce Phantom

I finally got my Winchester 94 back from gunsmith jail. A good friend at Mountaintop Firearms and Gunsmithing in Spencer NY did all the work. He started in June with the only instruction of "make it nice and take you time". He has been wanting to do the engraving for over 30 years but no one would cut him loose.

This rifle is from a rather short production run in their history where they used a special steel that when blued turns a bronze-plum. He had to consult with a couple metallurgist and a chemist from Cornell University to find a way to make the engraving turn black while the rest of receiver turned plum. The chemical material mix is his trade secret and this is the first time ever it has been done.

The checkering was done by hand but looks as if it was done by a laser. Straight, parallel, even and just as perfect as a guy could ask for. He spent over 120 hours in checkering alone.

The metal work is nothing short of spectacular, both outside and inside. Clean, crisp corners with no sanding marks. He does not use any power tools, All done by hand.

In my mind this is like a Rolls Royce Phantom. No detail overlooked. And it's MINE!!!!

Wow, that looks really great. VERY nice work by your gunsmith. A little nervous awaiting the results and return I would suspect? My own Winchester 94 is your typical "stick it in the pick up gun rack and go deer hunting" model in 30/30 but I do love it's iconic look and Winchester history.

Re: Winchester 94 --Rolls Royce Phantom

Some real nice clean crisp work rite there, I would be very happy with that work , being a fan of winchesters in general and owning a few 94 and 94ae , and also having a few plum, copper, red winchesters that I got on the cheep over the years. I will only say that if indeed the trade secret is the real deal and only time will tell ,the person who holds that chemical mix recipe is going to be very wealthy . would like to here from you now and then in this thread how the blue/black is holding up

Re: Winchester 94 --Rolls Royce Phantom

This rifle will never go hunting again. I'm building a live edge walnut shadow box to display it in.

Now I'm looking for another 94 30-30 to hunt with

Very nice work. Am lucky enough to have my grandathers 94 in 30/30. He bought it the 1930's. Also a 9422 that I love to shoot.

Re: Winchester 94 --Rolls Royce Phantom

I'd show it off too! Nice looking Craftsmanship.

My old 94 1948 vintage looks like it spent most of it's life rattling around in the bed of a pickup. It's also chambered in a .32 which the ammo is getting harder to come by, so a few years ago I bought several boxes to stash.... just because.

That is beyond fantastic. Artwork at its finest.

I have my wife’s grandfathers model 94 from 1954 and my fathers from 1974. The 54 model is silver from carrying and I sure wish it could tell me its stories.

Re: Winchester 94 --Rolls Royce Phantom

Guys talk about jobs like this ruin the value of a gun. That only matters if you are going to sell it. I'm keeping this until 2 years after I die.

I made a promise to my fishing buddy's' widow to keep this rifle and fully intend to keep that promise. I have the guns I need, now it's time to have ones my grandkids will fight over at my estate.

Now I'm on the hunt for a revolver to complement this

Wow, sweet rifle and great craftsmanship! I have a very heavily engraved between wars Mannlicher-Schonauer with dual triggers in 7mm that would take a lot to get out of my hands.

Re: Winchester 94 --Rolls Royce Phantom

That shows that it was done by a master craftsman. A lot of detail work. He should be proud of the work and you should be proud of that rifle.
