So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

I am pretty sure I am not the only person blessed with numerous calls during the day and into the evening from either: toll free numbers, unavailable name numbers, private numbers and various others. Got a new one yesterday, I CALLED MY SELF? Home phone rang with my name listed on the caller ID while I was sitting in the recliner talking to the other half. I didn't answer just in case it was me, LOL I may talk to my self privately when I do something stupid but didn't want to do it in front of the wife. Didn't think that would look to good to her. Now I wonder what it is I wanted with my self.

I am SO TIRED of these annoying phone calls. Being on a NO CALL LIST nationally is a complete joke. A lot of calls ID'd with the local area code and prefix of our little town but always unavailable for the name. Never leave a message. If I don't know the ID name listed I let the machine talk to them. If they leave a message I will call back if needed. Usually it isn't. Even get a few unknown calls on my cell phone. If not in my contact list leave me a message in my voice mail. Few of them ever do.

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

Where I live I get tons of calls from the "chinese" government saying my relatives are in jail if I do not pay the fine.

Or atleast that is what I have read some of the translations are.

I hate these calls, I think my being on the "no call" list actually gives them a list to call......

I believe it does too Dale.
I also have called my home phone on my home phone. Mine displays on my tv so I don’t have to get up to see who it’s from. That’s cool. I cannot see what someone gets out of sending out these calls. It’s harassment plain and simple!

Harass them back. I'm such a smart azz that I actually enjoy annoying them until they hang up on me. It makes me laugh. I've been hung up on and laughed for 10 minutes.

Except the robot ones. Those are no fun.

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

Spoofing aside, If I don't recognize the caller to my cell, I won't answer. No caller ID on the landline though, so we usually pick up until they start coming too often, at which point we let the machine take over.

I find it hard to believe that nothing can be done. I have long maintained the problem is just not a priority. If annoying (or worse, threatening) calls were bombarding the White House, you can bet the perps would be tracked down promptly and dealt with harshly.

Sometimes spammers cant get your phone information and use your phone number to make spam calls. Don't ask me how they do it?
So if you saw your own number come up on a spam call. . .

No disrespect intended...

I'm surprised you guys still have hard line phones in your homes. Why? I cut that cord over 10 years ago. The only telephonic communication device necessary is the one you carry in your pocket. Any phone services that are wired directly to your residence is simply subsidizing your local telephone company...they love you! Maybe it's only another 5 bucks a month but that's 5 bucks a month that is largely being wasted.

If you sit down and think it through...what do you do on that phone that you couldn't do more easily on the thing in your pocket? Have you ever dialed 911? Your cell is fully capable of doing 911 just fine as well as the other *11 services available out there.

POTS is a thing of the distant past. Just sayin'

Thank you,

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

We kind of the exception. Our cell service at home really poor so the land line is needed.
I too like to harass the callers. Keep them on the line as long as possible. Keep them thinking I might give tem my credit card number for a lower credit card rate.

Because where I live we have reception sometimes. With a booster antenna I have 2 bars. When at my neighbors you have to be on the porch or in the bathroom. By the way we have our choice of verizon or verizon. Noone else has service out here. Then again I just got cable internet 3 months ago. I payed dearly for it since it was only run down the main drag in the county! Not everyone lives in a city.

On edit. I forgot that some jobs require it such as nurses who are on call.

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

We got a better deal on our cable and internet when we had those and the phone bundled in. My wife's parents, and sometimes my dad would call on the land line. Her parents have both passed now and my dad finally figured out to please call on our cells. I have unhooked the Comcast phone, but the numbers still show up on the screen when someone calls (very seldom)

Same here. At my house in Lake Isabella you have to run around the yard like some sort of lunatic to try and get a signal. Cell works just fine at my other place I don't have a landline there.

So. Who are you going to pick? Verizon or Verizon?

I recorded the tone from a FAQ machine, and play that for the spammers. Probably doesn't do any good, but makes me feel better.

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

I still have a landline because if i cancel it my internet is higher , and my provider is my only internet choice . I have an answering machine on the landline but I never give that number out so the messages are just trash that I never listen to . I dont have voice mail set up on my cell so you either get me or you dont .

I get these also, and they annoy me the most. Only I'm in Georgia. And the calls are entirely in Mandarin or Cantonese and have soothing muzak playing in the background, and the message (per one of my very-fluent Chinese friends) usually has a message about either a document or parcel being stuck in customs or at a government office or embassy, and I need to pay a small amount of money to release it, either for taxes/duties or some other administrative fee.

It's annoying as hell. Between that and the car warranty calls, I want to pull my hair out. Oh wait. I don't have any, anymore.

And we have nobody to blame but ourselves. We allowed the cronies representing us up in Washington to pass legislation and funnel tax dollars into the telco companies who give us jack-crap in return, other than craptastic decade-old technology putting us behind everyone else. Then they appoint telephony lobbyist d-bags like Ajit Pai to take over the FCC when it's widely known his primary interest is helping both his and their buddies at the communications companies out, rather than improving services to rural areas and doing very basic, logical things, like authenticating phone calls so these turd burglars can't spoof calls at us.

And don't even get me started on how much money they make off stealing your personal information from your websurfing, internet usage and other habits to any 3rd party willing to buy it! It was bad enough when Facebook was selling all your personal browsing habits and other info off. Now your internet providers are doing it. But don't expect any protection coming from DC, they want their friends to make as much money as possible while they're still in office. We need to empty the swamp, but, like, actually for-real this time versus the lip service we've been getting the last two decades.

Yeah, sure …

We have absolutely NO cell phone reception where we live. We do have one flip phone that we use for emergencies, long trips, or one of us calling home from town. Right now I can't even remember our cell phone number.

We get both our land line and internet from the telephone co-op that just put in fiber optic about a year ago.

So I don't have a "thing" in my pocket. In fact I'm getting damn tired of the once in a while we go visit somebody and they can't put their "thing" down. I'm about ready to just turn right around and go home.

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

Dang!!!!!

Right... I've been living inside the bubble so long I'd forgotten there are places devoid of reception. Even some right in the middle of clearly covered zones.

That's what happens I guess when you decide to live in a major city like I did a long time ago!

I do remember having the answering machine and checking it when I got home or even checking it from remote when I was away. My first cell phone came around 1995 and wasn't really that great, certainly not very useful anywhere but in the city. By the time I was ready to do away with the landline the Cell device had become much more, no where near what it is today though.

It's just to me at 50 years old, the thought of a telephone in the house ringing is a very foreign thing.

BTW I get lots of crap calls on my cell too: car warranty, bank scam, china, etc.

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

Got a number that appeared on my phone from Australia yesterday, since I do not know anyone, or do business in Australia, I did not answer and they left no message. I'm quite sure it was a Wildfire Relief Fund or some other scam.

Nice thing about phone technology is you can put a name or contact to numbers, no name, no answer. They can leave a message if it's important.

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

My son (18) the other day asked why we still have a landline.

My daughter (22) replied, "What number would you give the spammers?"

Truly - any time I have to give a number at a retailer or wherever, it is the home number. My wife gives her cellular number. She gets way more spam calls on her cell phone than I do..

Re: So, Yesterday I Called My Self?

I got a few phone calls last year and both times they left me a message that if I did not take care of my past due account they were going to file a suit against me in the United States of America. I have decided to wait in my trail date papers.

My cell phone is a company phone that I also get to use personally. When a spammer or telemarketer calls I tell them I am a professional engineer and my hourly rate is $175 an hour. If they would like to continue to talk I need a credit card or purchase order number to charge to.
