Re: Thoughts on my new motor build

dont mean to take this thread in a different turn,

how do you guys feel about the package that edelbrock puts together with the aluminum heads cam and intake to match?

I'll throw it out there... I built my first 350 and thats where I went
.60 over
forged pistons
stock crank
stock rods
rpm heads
cam to match
air gap intake
Harland sharp roller rockers
not sure exactly on the carb yet

Re: Thoughts on my new motor build

[QUOTE=Marv D;3736815]600-700 n/a from a 327 is going to take a comp-eliminator budget ($30-40k range from drain plug to aircleaner bolt) I'm not even going to comment on the forced induction as that's not my thing. many MANY guys here WAY better versed in forced induction than I. Let's hear from them. QUOTE]

Thats what I was thinking. Not a big deal. Does 500HP seem resonable? Maybe a little nitrous on top? This is all undecided at the moment and I'm just looking for opinions. If you can put together a different block setup I'd definately consider it. Only thought of the 327 since its a quick rever and with some 6" rods and the whole deal it could have some potential.

327 with AFR 195 and a lumpy cam for 400+. Forged internals and a shot of juice will get you 500+

bmf I put together pretty much exactly that package in the late 90's for my truck. The RPM edelbrock package from cam to carb (heads, intake etc),,, used a clean 350 block I had, a cast GM crank, GM 'X' rods, and a set of old TRW L2304f pistons (the LT1 clones,, = 10.2 with a zero deck & 0.039 felpro gasket). I talked a lot with Scott Forte at Edelbrock about the package and be aware,, the 420HP the package made was a dyno queen 350 built specifically to peak the HP report. Scott would not divulge how long the motor lasted, or how many they went throu to make that 420HP. But he did say to expect an HONEST 380-390HP from the average build, which is very respectable. I never dyno'd the thing but time slips said that was pretty much in the HP range if I shifted in the 6800-7000rpm range. Then I got greedy and stuck a 250HP nitrous plate on it. Funny thing is that motor is still running today (minus the nitrous) in a buddy's 64 Nova bracket car. It's a well thought out package, just don't buy in to the advertised HP... it's just a number anyways.

No matter what you dream up, who's package you use,, look at putting the most STROKE into the combination and it will put the bigger smile on your face. If you have a 4" bore block,, I'd look at it as a 383 at a minimum,, and a 3.875" stroke will put you with a small block 396. How's that for cool.

(and ripdog,, you guys were just sitting around throwing me rope waiting for me to hang myself wern't ya,,, you knew eventually I'd admit there is a line where the big ol hunks of pig iron might actually be a good idea. <grins>

Re: Thoughts on my new motor build

Super and Marv, in all reality, if the Dart SHP block was out before i had build my BBC i would have that in my bay. No way would i go with an old 327/350 or any combo of them unless just for originality. I would have a 415/427/434 with some AFR's. I have been thinking a lot about the LSx but to much electronics for me.

Re: Thoughts on my new motor build

Not much more electronics than a SBC or BBC running an MSD.. Just put a carb intake on it and an LS1 MSD box..

There is something to be said about bigblock TQ, but that's what n20 is for..

Even with a Decon 871 on his back I bet he'd still have the same scared look on his face

Re: Thoughts on my new motor build

That is the only problem, you need more then N/A SBC to match a BBC which cost more for the same power. Some SBC additives you can find cheap.

Re: Thoughts on my new motor build

So after reading this entire thread the one thing I will walk away from this knowing is that I should return my Hyper pistons and save up for forged flat tops.
