Walnut Shell Media Blasting

I just ordered a 20 gal media blaster in which to blast my frame. My question is this: I have chickens, they are my friends and they eat everything! If I purchase walnut shell media, will it blast my frame well?

Re: Walnut Shell Media Blasting

Walnut is less abrasive than some of the other choices...it will clean with enough time and patience..
I also have 20 gal blaster.. my 60 gal compressor couldnt keep up and it was gonna take me way to long to blast it..I was using black beauty...
so I took all my frame stuff to a local blaster and he was done in a about a hr..... I had it in epoxy primer before dark..and the blasting cost less than the blaster I bought
As for the chickens,
I would be more concerned with all the crap you'll be removing from the frame..
Lay down some heavy plastic over a large area under the frame,,,itll catch most of it, and you can roll it and the crap up when done and throw it away
Be sure you have a good face shield, respirator, gloves and ear plugs..
Your clothes will be full of junk as well when your done..

Re: Walnut Shell Media Blasting

For a frame use something much more aggressive. Sand, crushed glass, black beauty, etc. Walnut is to be gentle on the substrate and that is just not required on a frame. Walnut isn't going to touch anything in the way of rust. As mentioned you need a lot of air to take on a big blasting job like that. An 11 cfm at 90 psi compressor with a 60 gal tank wouldn't keep up.
