Building a new shop.

In the process of building a 30x36 with 14ft eves pole barn style shop. Figured I would post some pics for people that are interested. I'm doing most of the work myself with help from family and friends. I will post pics as it progresses. I just got done getting the site level on Saturday. The shop kit is being delivered next Tuesday.

The shop will be erected first and then I'm poring a 6"slab of concrete. Going thicker on the concrete thru out the pour as I'm putting a two post car lift in the shop and want to be able to move it where ever I like and not worry about the thickness of the concrete.

Few pics....no real work done but materials and a lift I borrowed from a friend have arrived. I will be augering holes Saturday for the post. Hope to see some post standing next week.

So you're auguring the holes in, then pouring the slab around the posts? What holds the building to the slab besides gravity? Building codes are quite a bit different here in Calif

The holes are 24" around and 54"deep with 8 inches of concrete poured in the bottom for a pad so the poles dont settle into the ground. After the 8in pad setup and i got the poles where I wanted them I filled the hole with concrete. Here are a few pics of the progress, with the temps in my area pretty much at 100deg or over the last couple weeks work has slowed down on the shop.

Look small when they go up don't they? I am going to be limited by my property lay out when I build to a 30x40 (maybe 42) I need 28' deep on the inside.

They sure do look smaller than ya think on paper. I would have gone bigger but county regs limit your shop to the square footage of your house. I have a pretty small house so that's as big as I could go. Really wanted a 36x48 but they wanted me to add on to my house in order to do that.

Where I am, I am limited to twice the square footage of the house in total of out buildings. So, 3000 sq ft of out buildings. Includes everything, even the well house, chicken coup, you get the idea. Besides that my property is mostly on a hill side so I am limited by the amount of hillside I can remove also.

I have been pricing buildings also . Mine will be 24 x 52 . Yours is looking good .

Got the concrete all poured and hopefully will get a few sides of metal installed over the long weekend coming up.

there sure are some strange building codes around different parts of the country...I feel lucky to live where i don't have to deal with all the guvment b.s...can build what I want and not worry about it...

Got a few walls of metal up and going to finish the others this week. If it would be helpful I can take the time to list out most of the expenses that it took to build this when done. The unknowns have added up but staying pretty much on budget

Getting closer.......picked up a heat pump system and a 2 post car lift and got the man door installed. Waiting on the garage doors and the PUD to hook the power up.

Got the doors put up. This was my first time installing doors, first one took 6hrs 2nd one took 3 hrs. I went with the roof pitch door track to keep it up and out of the way for the 2post lift.

Very nice . So if you wanted to insulate the interior walls, how would you do that on a steel building?

There are 2x6 lumber running horizontal from each vertical pole 24" on center so 2ft rolls of insulation fit nice and snug between then you sheet it with what ya want. The area were I will be doing most of the welding, cutting and grinding I will sheet with metal to help with fire danger.

I hope I never have to sale it, part of the reason for the shop is to do a ground up original restoration of the old girl.

I bought a heat pump unit for the shop and a 2-post Challenger 10,000 pound lift. I will get the electrical run to the shop after elk season and call the PUD to get it hooked up to the meter. I got a good deal on a new HVAC unit that you see installed on the modular school classrooms from a friend. Never been around them so I hope it does a good job. I wont really know until I get it insulated but that may not happen until 2018 as the money reserve for this project is running near the bottom . Its like the one attached in the pics.
