It's alive!

Nephew said he wants to buy my 68 GMC but only if it's running and able to make it to Grand Forks.

Alright. It's been sitting untouched for 9 years. New fuel pump, carb kit, clean plugs, squirt penetrant in cylinders and prime th oil system. Last night after I primed the oil and cranked it over I then put the plugs back in. The tank is 1/3 full of gas from when I parked it so I tried to siphon it out. Nah, that's not working worth a crap. I poured fresh gas in th bowl vent (Q-jet) and a bit more down into intake. I left th inlet hose off th fuel pump for now. Within 2 revolutions it fired up and ran fair. I did that again with same results then thought " I'd really like to see this thing run and idle on its own".

Against better judgement I hooked up th fuel pump and primed the carb again. It popped right off, sputtered a second then idled like 9 years didn't even pass by. WTF?! Then another absence of common sense came upon me. Let's see if it moves. Sure enough, it not only moves, It did a burnout! All this on 9 year old gas/turpentine.

Tomorrow I'll take it to work and replace the rusted rear brake line and toss some fresh wiper blades on it.

Nephew will be here Saturday to pick it up.

Talk about a bittersweet situation. I hate to see it go but I could use the money and space. At least it's staying in the family. I spent tons of money (have all receipts) and time building this truck. I've wanted it since 1984, I'm the second owner. My family, friends and I have lots and lots of memories of this truck.

Excuse me while I go cry in the corner

Re: It's alive!

I use mine everyday, daily driver, rust and all. It never has hesitated to start for me. Every time I fixed something that did not need repair I would find something to fix, that did need repair.

Now 11 years later I am the wiser, I like my rust, nobody else does so there!

Yep, you are better off with old old gas than not so old ethanol. Even if the gas, meaning not ethanol, has gone bad the worst thing that will happen is it won't start. If it is varished in the carb ports then that is a pain, but still at least everything isn't crapped out like with ethanol...within months.

Re: It's alive!

It sucks to sell a vehicle you've had for so long, it's like saying good bye to an old friend. Got any pics?

Re: It's alive!

I sold my truck to a good friend when I was going through a nasty divorce.
I didn't want to do it. But things were what they were.
A couple of years later I bought it back when things got better.
Funny thing the guy I originally bought it from years ago lives by me, and he wants to buy it back.
It's not for sale, hopefully it never will be again. I was lucky to get it back.

Re: It's alive!

I'm surprised LockDoc hasn't chimed in yet.

The last time I drove it, 71swb4x4 and I hauled a 67 1 ton dually behind my truck. We were on ice and it started to jack knife at 65mph. Look in the archive, early February of 2009. I think LockDoc started the thread
