I have this old axe - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

What I have is just the axe head, and I'd like to get it fitted with an authentic top line handle.

It was given to me many years ago from an old friend that was cleaning out his fathers home in Oregon after he passed away, and to ship it to me he had to unfortunately cut the handle off.

It says PLUMB and 42 on one side, with no other markings on the other side.

Any idea how old this is?

I'd like to order a new top quality handle, but I don't know who to order from and how to describe what I need. I'm hoping that same person could sell me a vintage style leather sheath to keep it safe.

Looking for suggestions on who to talk to on getting this nice old bit back into action, since I want to put it with my other vintage camping gear in my Suburban.

Chris, that is sooo cool!

Can't personally help with the handle but member Windancer was
having very nice custom leather sheathes made for his knives.
You might want to PM him on that.

Looking forward to the other tool forum responses.

i'd go to a farm supply type store to look for a handle that is straight and that the end that goes in the ax is oversized// then at home shape the end on the belt sander for a very good fit/// b4 doing anything and tryin to install a handel make sure the wood is fully dried and cured

A hickory axe handle.Old timers would use a shard of glass to shave the axe handle down to fit.

Vectorit, I too have an old axe. It has been handed down for a few generations. It was once owned by Abraham Lincoln. Of course the head and the handle have been replaced a few times...

It looks like a normal double bit axe. A little thinner blade than mine (the real axe that I have

), the same handle hole. A standard double bit handle should work. A pick axe handle will not even come close. Try a farm store like Rural King, Tractor Supply Company, Do-It-Right Hardware, you get the drift.

Thanks guys for checking, and the info on the above link was informative.
It answers my question, as to style or region the bit was intended.
Plus it doesn't seem like it's a antique or something special, so I am going to plan to get a nice hickory handle for it and use it.

I do know that it did come from the Puget Sound area, and was used by a logger in the 1920's and 30's.

So it's just another quality tool to add to my collection, just that this one has a little history to it.

In particular this one is on replacing hammer handles. Thought you would like it. Sorry about your spare time though, once you start watching him, he is a bit addictive.
