Re: Paint Codes

Should be a code in the glove box on the RPO list. Will be two numbers followed by a U, like 12U (white).

http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorli...truck-pg01.jpg

Their color chip book only goes back to 84 unfortunately, but you could stop in at a paint store and they'd no doubt have a chip book. If your local O'Reillys is also a paint carrying store, they'd have a color chip deck as well I bet.

Yours could be 87U, wheatland yellow.

Re: Paint Codes

yea i looked at that sheet
no where are there any paint codes

ive tried everything i can think of, thats why i wanted to post a pic to see if anyone else has seen this color.
i tried a few paint supply stores around town, they couldnt even tell me what it was
i think it might be a fleet ordered truck...

the closest color that matches is wheatland yellow... but my is more goldish than the wheatland...

Re: Paint Codes

Welcome to the board from another Texas '86 C10 owner.

I have never seen that color before, and have no idea what it might be...

Ok, I forgot along the line they grouped all of GM vehicles under General Motors and stopped the Chevrolet listing. They do have a chip chart for 86. "Commercial" covered all trucks, including fleet. I still say it's probably that code 87. Between the junky color chip quality, and a little bit of fade on your truck, just a guess.

Re: Paint Codes

Looks pretty close to mine with a little age on the paint... I know for sure that the color I have is called 'Saddle Tan'.... as far as the paint code goes... the tag came off inside the glovebox, and the door tag got painted over.

Thanks.. unless I'm not paying attention or what.. but I can't seem to spot many trucks close to these colors.... pretty unique colors. Im sure it's called saddle tan.. but then I've seen that color name used for interior colors too, although I can faintly see the name "Saddle Tan" on the reference sticker on the top of the driver side wheel well under the hood by the washer fluid bottle...maybe it does mean the interior color only? I've also seen the name "Desert Sand Metallic" used for colors like this too.. so maybe thats the real name... I do see a bit more yellow in yours.. maybe it was painted over.. and someone was experimenting with the tints and tones in the color... and it was more brown originally? you never know. I also like the way yours looks with all the trim on it,... trying to hook mine up like that.. but I see yours is a Silverado... mine's a Custom Deluxe.. so no molding from the factory... have to drill, and attach

Does the door jambs and dash match the outside color?...

Re: Paint Codes

Wheatland Yellow is also "school bus yellow". That is not the color you have.

Re: Paint Codes

An 86 model would be in the gray area if the dealer (parts dept) could decode the last 8 of your VIN and give you a color code. Late 80's and early 90's it is just hit and miss if they can.

Re: Paint Codes

It should be on the SPID in the glove box, usually the paint codes are the last things listed, should be 2 digits followed by a u (upper) and/ or a L (lower). I have seen many solid color trucks that have both, ie: 32U and 32L, solid color, the upper and lower have the same paint code. The brief description following the paint code may be misleading, making you think it something else. You could just right down all the codes from the spid, go to your local paint store, have them look up the paint codes for all the numbers on the spid (no doubt some will not cross over to paint codes) and see if that gets you anywhere.

Here's the closest I come with my 1986 GMC Color and Trim Book (this is the book the dealer had to help you choose colors and fabrics).

Re: Paint Codes

I think your truck is a special order color since it is not listed on the SPID. It's definitely not the normal metallic gold color, nor is it wheatland yellow. Maybe Keith will chime in.

Re: Paint Codes

I do remember we used to have what was called "FLEET COLORS" for a page in our books every year. They stopped that it seems in the 90's sometime though. You'd have to find someone with a complete set of 1986 color chip books to go much further. Large automotive paint stores would have them.

I know exactly the color you are talking about. It does not look gold at all and when it fades, it just turns to a pale yellow.

I was just digging through my old automotive paint books and there seems to be conflicting info between PPG and Martin Senour... it doesn't help that I'm missing the PPG '86 GM truck colors. But, I did find a color in the '86 Martin Senour book that looks VERY close. It's called Colorado Gold poly, code 51, or WA-7953. Oddly, the color chip is listed as an '85 color, but it's the '86 color chart. At any rate, it looks like it.
