Re: MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

You know, I'm not surprised... this is very common in these. Much nicer, though, to have the light yellow truck sitting outside that has the pieces on it that I need.... just have to cut them off.

Looks pretty good to me...almost exactly what I am working through on the blue one...

well worth the purchase price - even if they look solid in pix now - I know there will be rust hiding on these trucks...

Actually, it's not that bad. The plan in my head has it going back together fairly easy. This is the kind of truck I wanted back when I got the other one... straightforward repairs and you know you've got a strong solid truck when you're finished.

Any word on that Jimmy yet, Tom?

This is how rocker and floor repairs should be done! Hell, this is how changing your oil should be done!!

Re: MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

No word on the Jimmy yet...but I won't need to do anything with it until spring so that is fine by me.

Looks like you are moving along pretty good - nice lift.

It can be a pain to do all this work on the ground [sore back, legs, etc.].

Appears to be all the normal rust spots...

These pix would be a good 'where to look for rust on blazers?' answer.

I am hoping to get some welding done today - we will see how that goes.

Re: MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

bump for an update....and I was wondering - are you going to be using these patch panels from the old truck that are pictured below [labeled Right C-2 - not the other one pictured that holds the torsion box end cap]?

I was going to buy them in the Spring and figured I would see if you were going to use them before looking around elsewhere.

Let me know when you have a minute.

Thanks.

Re: MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

Yep, I'm going to have to use them on the new one. The bottoms of the b pillar on both sides were completely rusted away. Should be welding the whole right side together tonight actually. Sorry I couldn't help ya.

No worries - figured I would ask.

I will just order a set later this month and get them welded in...when the time comes.

Not that my opinion matters much around here, but, I think it was a wise choice to get a new tub. When I did mine, after all the rust was gone, so was most of my body! Left with 2 bedsides and a winshield/cowl. Time wise, you are way ahead of the game.

Keep plugging away its lookin' good

Aww, c'mon Jim. Your opinion matters around here. Don't get so down on yourself. And thanks, I like having the new tub, too. Your truck sounds a lot like the one I started with. I had grand illusions, but when it came right down to it, like you said, there just wasn't much truck left.

The reason I continued down that path was I got tired of hearing guys badmouth the repop metal. I wanted to see for myself if there were issues. I've blended,OEM, old stuff, and repro stuff with out any problems. The one I do have is probably my fault for not paying attention

Re: MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

The right side is pretty much finished up. Just have to weld the rocker on permanently and weld in the patch for the floor.

Re: MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

I did a little sanding last night.... put a full 12 hours in on this thing. Man, if I could put 12 hours in on this every day, it would be done in no time.

Re: MY 1971 Jimmy Build Thread

Nice progress - don't wish for every day to be a 12 hour day...I put way too many hours into my truck so far - at least I am almost done with the rust repair...if every day was a 12 hour day on these trucks - I might not like them as much -

I am taking a break from mine right now - been out there for 5 hours already today [trying to get the floor wrapped up]...

Hoping to get the driver side buttoned up today - not sure if I can do it - I already lost an hour [thanks to DST].

I will then turn my attention to the area behind both b pillars to get that wrapped up as well.

Imagine if you were still trying to fix that rust on the other tub - you would be cursing a LOT more...

One step closer

Got a little primer sprayed yesterday afternoon- zinc chromate. I remember my dad spraying this stuff on the sides of buses when I was a kid. I didn't think of that until I saw the color, though, then I was like, 'Oh yeah. I remember this stuff.' It went down real smooth.
