Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Replaced broken side mirror.CAUTION Work truck pictures ahead;

I was trying to tighten the mount and the stud broke at about 60 Ft.Lbs and almost broke my nose- did break my shades.

This is the original mirror from the 60s I'm sure. The curved piece is SOLID steel with the ends turned down and threaded. Here is a picture of the original compared to the cheapo aftermarket replacement that did NOT hold the mirror in place at speed because the threaded insert was not staked in the tube.

So I went to the local pick-your-part expecting to walk for miles but right there at the entrance was a nice 1978 with it's mirrors intact. Different style but at least it stays put in the wind. Added a spot mirror to the bottom. -BA

Received my new rear brake lines from Inline Tube for Raymond....PB Blaster, the proper tools & patience just doesn't overcome 47 years of rust

Busy weekend.
New 4 row aluminum radiator from Summit.
SUM-384018 had to notch the upper supports a little bit.

And finally got the bedliner sprayed in my other moneypit.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

A couple minor accomplishments over the weekend.

After a few days of soaking all the lines and nuts I got the mater cylinder and distribution block removed. Soaking all the bleeders and line connections at the wheels so I can hopefully blow out the lines before I install the new master.

Sunday I thought I would quickly strip and prime one of the bed steps only do discover the finish goes in this order: clear, olive green metallic, mint green metallic, and primer. The greens and clear were laid on thick. After much sanding, blasting, and a bit of swearing I did get a quick coat of primer on the bare metal. Gotta come up with a better plan for the rest of the bed.

As is often the case when working on 40+ year old vehicles you can expect it to take twice as long and cost three times what you expected. Or vice versa. Welcome to our club.

Didnt work on it but bought a nice OEM gate for the stepper. The bottom looks like its bent laying on the table but it straight. Not dents just a little surface rust.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Well I was thumbing thru many threads of these trucks running rough and found that the HEI trucks are gapper at 45. My truck had auto lite platinum gapped at 35 from PO that still looked new and clean. Swapped out with a.c. Delco 43s gapped at 45. Wow. Runs so smooth now. Even starts better.

You could have bought that plywood in Tennessee, and hauled it home in that Cheyenne you know.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

More bed work. Starting to take the old wood bed out. Wouldn’t be so bad but some PO decided tongue and grove wood with a crap pot full of carriage bolts was the answer. And drill holes in all the cross sills for the bolts. Hope the sills aren’t trash when I get this out.

Also started straightening, stripping, and painting the rear fender braces. I’ll have two good sets for my project with at least one set left over. Still have a couple to take off the drivers side fender.

1970 CST truck. The bed was really ugly and had a bunch of different colors of paint. Previous owner used the truck to haul house paint. Today my wife and I are applying Herculiner bed paint. Got the first coat on and it looks great, Gonna do the second coat in about an hour.
