Auto headlights - 2002 siverado

Hello
I have a 2002 Silverado 2500 HD that I am trying to disable the
auto headlights on. Tired of pushing that button four time every
time I stop.
Anyone know which wire at the emergency brake pedal is tied
into this ?

KEL: there are two fuses in the under hoodfuse box. one labled igne 10 amp (this controls the power to the day time relay coil) the 2nd is the DLR fuse 10 amp that controls the switch power to turn on the daytime lights. pull this fuse the (10 amp DLR) and the DLRs should be off. i hope this is a better plan than the old park brake wire. (the park brake wire is light blue in color)

Just curious, but why do you want to disable a safety feature? Are you having problems with the bulbs blowing out frequently? If so, it may be a loose headlight, which can be tightened back up. The vibration causes the bulbs to blow prematurely.

I don't want to disable the Daytie Running Lights.
I want to stop the headlights from coming on every
time I turn the key to the "start" position. I'm tired of
playing the e-brake game or pressing the button four times
each and every time I get in my truck.

not sure on yours but with mine to turn the auto headlights off I have to turn my headlight swith to the left. (i do it when I start my truck and go inside in cold weather so the lights are not on as people drive by)

Lets get some lingo straight:

DRL-Daytime Running Lamps:
This is a feature that has been standard on many GMs since the late 90s. The come on to help to make you more visible to oncoming traffic. It turns the low beams on when the parking brake is released. On some manual tranny models, the DRLs will be on anytime the parking brake is released. On most auto tranny models, they come on when the truck in put in gear or with the parking brake off (depends on the model/year). Usually there is a fuse that can be pulled to disable the DRLs.

The "Auto Headlights" feature:
This feature came out on the NBS trucks in 99 and other models around the same time (my 99 S10 had this feature). There is a photocell mounted in the dash (in the center of the dash in the defrost vent, some are flat and some stick up in a bulb shape-I believe this is on the models with the temp/compass in the rear view). This photocell is similar in function to the one on the outside of your house that turns on your security lights. It sends a signal to the control modual automatically turns on your light. You can override this by turning your headlight switch to the left once and from there you will have to operate them manually.

It sounds like you want to stop the DRLs. You should be able to accomplish this by pulling the fuse as stated earilier. If all of the lights come on like it is dark out even when it is daylight, you need to check and make sure the photocell has not been pushed into the dash or has something covering it. At work we have a 04 HD that got the photocell pushed into the dash by the guy who drives it putting his clipboard and paperwork on top of it. I put it back once (PITA) and he did it again. His boss said that since he keeps knocking out, he can start buying the bulbs that are buring all the time. Hope this helps.

I understand the diff between DRL and AUTO HEADLIGHTS. I want to shut off
the AUTO HEADLIGHTS. In this truck, you have to do it each and every time you turn the key to the "run" position. To override this, every time you get in the truck and turn the key to the "run"position, you have to press the
"dome override" button four times. If the emergency/parking brake is set, the
headlights don't come on until you release the brake, provided the key is in the "run" position. That is why I originally asked if anyone knew which wire at the emergency/parking brake was tied into the AUTO HEADLIGHTS.

By the way, I have the domed style sensor in the middle of the dash.

the way these things are wired i really woludn't mess with it i saw a guy change out his radio and not use any adapters and everything stopped working on his dash cost him 1500 for a new internal wiring harness every system is tied together somewhere some how

Just out of curiosity why is it you want to disable the auto headlights? I find with mine they only come on when i believe they should be on anyway. I am not against turning them on myself, but i fail to see the point in working hard on disabling something only to make more work for yourself in the end.

This will help you out, real simple to do. I did this to my '01 a while back and am really glad I did it. The auto headlights are nice but annoying to me. I couldn't ever get mine to shut off, tried the dome light button and nothing would work.

Here ya go...

Basically you will need a pair of wire cutters and a 1.5K ohm 1/2 watt resistor that you can get at Radio Shack. Electrical tape and possibly some wire nuts will work to wire in the resistor. You can solder the wires if you wish.

You may want to remove the neg. battery cable to assure you don't do any unwanted damage to the electrical system. This is not necessary, but a good precaution to take.

First locate the Body Control Module (BCM) which is under the dash, below the steering column. Laying on the floor, this should be visible without removing any dash panels. You should find a purple connector (C3). Unplug it.

Locate the white and gray wires (A4 and A6). I don't remember if white is A4 and gray is A6 or vice versa. It doesn't matter anyway. BTW - there are two gray wires in the connector. The one you want is the one farthest away from the white wire.

Clip these two wires that are coming off this plug (C3). Leave a few inches to work with. Tape up or place wire nuts over the other end of these wires that go up under the dash(they go to the light sensor). You have now removed the light sensor from the electrical system and is now just a dash ornament.

Connect the gray wire from the plug (C3) to one end of the resistor and the white wire to the other end. Make sure you tape up all wires to prevent a short. You should now have a gray wire coming from C3, going to one lead of the resistor and the white wire from C3 to the other resistor lead. Plug in C3 to the BCM and replace the neg. battery cable if you removed it. Start the truck and make sure the lights are off. Throw a dark towel or something over the light sensor on the dash and verify the lights stay off. Try your light switch that has probably never been used and that's it!

That makes more sense to me then. It's just i have a few friends with these trucks and they go and disable all of the automatic features like that, for no reason what so ever other than "manual is cool". And i don't understand it at all.
