Man, it is hard to believe that is the same truck, nice to see one bring one back from being so far gone.

Your welcome, and thanks. I think they come in handy for a lot of projects.
I wish I could be of more help to you on your floor, I've never dug that deep into it.

Thanks, to be perfectly honest with you this truck has more good going for it than what the exterior shows. It is mechanically sound, I can deal with a little rust.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Dude, you got big ones! LOL I guess living in SoCal my whole life, I am not used to seeing this type of rust (or worst). I would have looked at that and sent it to the scrap yard.

Great job on bring it back to life! Never would have thought it was the same truck. BTW, what size rear tires are on there?

Ha, ha, ha. You wouldn't have sent it off to the scrap yard with out pulling off all the good stuff first! Here in Utah, the roads are salted in the winter because of our heavy snowfall, so this kind of rust is common on most old vehicles, at least in Northern Utah.

My last project, '72 Suburban, the majority of the rust repair had already been done so I didn't really get the chance to tear it apart to see how it all went together. With this project, I get to have the ability to do the rust repair and say, "yeah, I did the work." I have looked at this project as a challenge to overcome.

As for the tires, they are 295/50/15 BFG's front and rear. If I want to run these tires I'm gonna have to get some smaller fronts.

Thanks, if you look at the first post in this build thread I have a rendering of what I want it to look like when I'm done.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

This weekend, I had a hard time uploading my pics, I did get a little work done.
I cleaned up my rear brake drums and made some shock re-locators, I did a little work on the front of the bed.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Here are the pics.

I had a leftover piece of deep unistrut. I drilled some holes for the shock, cut it down so it would clear the top of the shock, painted it black. It took about and hour and saved me sixty bucks. I'm gonna make a couple more for my suburban.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Small update. I spent Saturday trying to stay out of the rain so I built some upper bag brackets. Not to complicated; I took some leftover circles, Cut 1 inch off a 4 inch pipe, flat peice of steel and a 3/4 inch, bolt weld it all together and this is what you get.

Sunday morning was much better for wheather wize, I simply bolted the bags up to the rear, had to try out my new toy. I also noticed my shocks on the bottom were mounted backwards. Fixed that.

I never seem to sick of messin' around with air suspention.

I also recieved my woofers in the mail this weekend. It onlly took three months. But that's the price you pay when you get them cost. (Thanks Johnny.) That will make a good project for my suburban in the winter.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I finally got some time to post the the progress I've made. The last three weeks I've been super busy; at work and play. I spent all last weekend in Moab, Utah on the Jeep trails. I managed to get some work done on the truck. Me and three friends put the bed back on. (Sorry about the backs, guys.) Thanks Mike, Matt and Jeff!

I also fixed the small cracks in my grille. I also worked on the grille shell getting the big dents out, this shell is in really bad shape. I also made some time to cut my front coil springs, I cut coil and a half off. They say that's three inches, ha-ha-ha.

I needed to move it around until I get my bags mounted, I'm going to need to get new front tires, these rub on bumps.

It's starting to look like a truck again, the neighbors are happy.

Hey, Matt, How's the ride now?

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I spent some time this weekend working on a cowl screen. My truck is parked under a maple tree, and I knew I was going to get a bunch of leaves down there, my truck is equipt with a leaf clean out hole, provided by the kick pannel. Leaves also end up in the inside of my truck, thanks to the well thought out speaker holes.

I took an old ceiling grill vent that I got from work, and cut it to the right shape, painted it black, I then siliconed it to the bottom side of the cab. I know I'm gonna need to take it off when I repaint, but I'm just trying to keep all the crap from getting in there.

That's work pretty nicely... Better than $50 or whatever LMC sells them for. Keeps this from happening!

I figured I would save myself fifty bucks. 'Cause that's fifty bucks I don't have! It really wasn't too difficult, but this project has turned into a "do-it-myself-because-of-lack-of-funds."

Your truck has come along way since then. I suppose you are going to find a way too keep the junk out.

Saturday progress:

I put new poly-urethane body bushings in the cab. I also welded in the drivers side gas door. Nothing big, just more of the same boring stuff.

Thanks, I appreciate the support. I hope my suburban build has been helpful. If you have any questions, just give me a PM. I checked out your VW, that is pretty sweet. I really love the older buses, totally classic.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

This weekend's progress: More of the boring stuff.

I patched the antenna hole, and smoothed out the gas door on the passenger side. Unfortunately, I got a little warpage during the welding and grinding. I didn't want to use that much body filler; but hey, what do you do?

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I spent some time on the extra gauge cluster I had. I had an old tach sitting around. I saw how to do this in the FAQ sections. If you want a more detailed how to, just go to the FAQ index and do a search.

I painted the bazel with Dulpli-color chrome spray paint and the inner plate with Dupli-color with blue metal specks, they were just sitting in my garage left over from past projects.

This is how it looks all together:

Nice! Plus, I found out that milk crates make better seats than five gallon buckets. You also need to mention how much better it runs now that you found out that the secondaries were FUBAR. Still need a donor carb?

That's the first time I've had three adults in my truck.
Yeah It runs sooooo much better, I did a small burn out in front of my house no sweat! It is making it really hard not to keep it.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Well, I really like the long bed, but I would really like short bed even more. I have a '69 short bed frame that I bought with the truck. I was going to start the swap last week, but I helped move my brother. Maybe this week end.

I can see it already . . . well, almost!

I've got the shortbed frame all painted and ready to go. If you don't hear from me for a while, I'm busy?

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Here are some pictures of what the truck looked like two weeks ago. The body work was coming along nicely, however, I have drastically changed my mind about the direction of this project, but don't worry, it won't become a ford or anything...

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Since last weekend I've been working on pulling the bed and cab off. I was able to do the bed by myself, but the cab was more difficult. Lucky for me, I have two really great buddies who always happen to show up in time to help prevent my back from straining. (Thanks again guys.)

This coming weekend, my plans are to pull the engine and tranny, followed by dropping the front and rear suspension out. Hopefully by next weekend, I'll be putting the suspension on the shortbed frame, so if you don't hear from me for awhile, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

My wife's happy about the new addition to her parking spot!
