Ignition Switch removal 1972 SC C10

I am trying to remove the Ignition Switch on my `72 - inside the cab where the key goes. I figured out the bezel needs to be turned, and I did this, but then I just kept turning it - it got loose but never separated from the mount. What am I missing? All I can figure is that the little stainless cap over the ignition module needs to be popped off. What's the deal?

you have to take the lock out. put the key in turn it to accessories position and stick a paper clip in the little hole on the face of the lock and then turn left. sometimes it takes a while to push in the pin inside the lock with the paper clip... turn it to the left and it comes out.

Why I am removing it

I should have mentioned I am doing this because my room mate borrowed the truck and lost the key. I was taking the switch out to take it to the locksmith to get another key cut. So I can't use the key to remove. Please advise.

Pick the lock or drive it out with a hammer and punch.
You will probably be buying a new bezel.
You might try prying the chrome cap off the key lock cylinder. It's the edge of this cap that's keeping the bezel from coming all the way off.

I wish I knew about the paper clip method. I used the scrap of rebar and BFH method! It worked quite well though.

If your missing ign key also fit your door locks, you could take a door panel off and remove a door lock cylinder. Take it to a locksmith and have a key cut from the code on the door cylinder. This is assuming that the code is stamped on the cylinder as I have seen some without any markings.

I was told this too, but on all my cars, the 68 GMC, the 71 Skylark, the 69 CHevrolet fullsize car, they all have a separate doorlock key, different!

I believe all the trucks were originally one key. I know mine is. The entire set is pretty cheap to buy new. You can get the ignition and door locks with 2 keys for about 25 or so dollars. I had to use the BFH method too mine was too wore to get it out I have new ones to replace it. They will all be one key

All,
I have been trying the paper clip and it is kicking my butt. I wish I new someone good at this. Was thinking of just buying a new, seperated unit. My problem is I bought the whole unit and just plugged it in. Finally got the old one out, but can't get the new one apart to put it back in the dash. Good to here i'm not the only one banging my head on this,

Good call on the removing the door lock. I left the ign. switch in and got the lock out in a couple of minutes, and the keys in a few days - the cost was $21 bucks. great to get `er moving again and being able to start on my Triumph bobber project.
