Was the torque convertor full of fluid when you installed it?

and the shift linkage is in fact moving the shifter shaft on the tranny...not just sliding around it?
Not trying to treat you like a dummy...just trying to look at the overlooked items. I have fallen for lots of stupid mistakes.

Is it possible for the cable to fall off the valve? Bear with me on this. The th-350 kick-down cable is attached to a piece of linkage inside the tranny and if it is allowed to go slack it can come loose and fall out of the hole. Is it possible that this may be the case?

I know its a TV cable and not a detent cable, but is it possible for it to come loose in the same manner?

Just tossin' out ideas

Krue - I did install the converter dry, but the fluid pump in the tranny pumped it full of fluid.

Longhorn Man - The shift linkage is moving the shifter shaft on the tranny. You can feel it shift the tranny. Its just nothing's catching.

screamin_c10 - I see what you're saying with the cable/valve connection. This cable attaches to a plunger with a J connection. I installed it with slack in the line, and I can feel the valve open if I pull on the cable.

I appreciate the ideas guys. I just got back from my neighbors and am going to borrow his scissor lift in the morning. I'm going to swap out these tranny's tomorrow and get this truck mobile.

Go to this link http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/frame.html put 4L60 in the search, go to installation instructions, it is instructions on the installation of a 4L60/700r4/200r4. You can use the brake switch to engage and disengage the converter. I have this set up and it works great. Bowtieoverdrive.com also sells the same type of set up.
