Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Renegade, what front coil overs did you use? We were thinking about going that route. I have seen ones from Heidts, QA1 and a couple others.

Thanks Bernie

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Hi,

I used QA1. I had used them in the past and liked them, so I went with them on this build.

Hi, the wheels are 15 x 15 Billet Specialties Street Lites with Mickey Thompson radials 18.5 x 29 on the rear with 5.5" back spacing. The front is the same in 15 x 8 with Mickey Thompson radials with 3.5" back spacing.

Thanks,

Thanks for the comments RatRod.
We added the grease fittings as a after thought. I am glad we decided to add them though.

Thanks,

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Hey Guys,

We just got done with the exhaust set up and the first couple of custom running board brackets. The exhaust and the brakets are going to be ceramic coated to match the headers. The brackets are made of heavy wall stainless.

Did you look at running the exhaust through the frame X member, I'm hoping to do that on mine.

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

duwem,
We looked at several different routes for the exhaust but inside the frame was just to busy. We found a tip design we thought would look good coming out at the rear of the running board and went to work. The trans cooler is actually now mounted inside the x-member at this point. We liked the space for air flow. These exhaust tips are going to be the biggest I've ever fooled with as they span the width of the running board plus some length for paint protection. I'm sure Renegade will post some pics when we get further along. Thanks for the great comments all!

Smile Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Hey all,

Fab1 and I will be working on the chassis some more this week end. I will post some more pics of our progress.
He has made a custom fuel line mount along with custom mounts for the trans cooler. Hopefully, we will get the 3/8 hard line formed and run this weekend too.
We also have the fuel tank mounted with custom built stainless mounts and plumbed up to the motor.
I would like to thank Fab1 for all his time and skills he has put into working with me on this build!

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

How did you attach the two frames together where you narrowed it? Also, how did you fasten the running board brackets to the frame?

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Renegade, You da man! Lol! Fun times. Fat Mike, the frame was carefully measured (Renegade is very meticulous with measurements), cut and narrowed to it's final position and box steel welded into the offset. We then welded a smaller tube under the connection for reinforcement, all before the entire frame was boxed. It turned out straight as an arrow thanks to some well place floor markings. Helps if the floor your working on is fairly level as Renegades' is. He made sure. Lol! Thanks guys! Oh yeah, The running board mounts are flanged just like the originals. The white behind them is gortex stuck to the frame to help with heat dissipation. We welded nuts into the frame before we boxed it (5/16"). Thanks again!

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Hey All,

Fab1 and I made some good progress today, trans cooler plumbed in with 3/8 aluminum tube, gas tank mounted and fuel line hooked up, steering linkage mocked up with 3/4 wood dowel rod, steering rod bearing support made and mounted.
Also, the first prototype for the custom exhaust tip that will come out under the running board.

Fab1 one will chime in a little later to fill you guys in about the exhaust tip and its design.

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Boy, you did post a load of pics. They look good! Well, the tip you see in the photos is the prototype and will not be used for a few reasons, the most prevalent being it's weight. Thing weighs a ton. It's all 1/8" stainless. The basic design though we agree we like. The final tips, if you can believe will be larger but much lighter. The same tubing used for the rest of the exhaust will be used to copy this design with greater drop @ the clamp (for shield clearance) and the 1-1/2" tips will be cut in. It arta sound good and deep. Renegade and I giggle like little school girls when we talk about the sound. Great day, had a blast! Great job on those steering angles btw. I wish it all went that well.

You and the guy that changes the oil will be the only ones to really enjoy all the work time and money you spent to create this work of art!

And now you are going to cover it all up with some sheet metal!!

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis

Jim (Oldman3),
Thanks for the compliments! Renegade and I both look @ your build thread on regular occasion. Very inspirational! In fact, the dowel rod for steering alignment was picked up from the third or fourth page of your build. Great idea and cheeper than guessing by far.
solidaxel,
Thanks for suggesting that this is "art". I wouldn't go so far but we appreciate it. Renegade has every intention of keeping and driving this truck, so we wanted to do it justice. I would imagine the builder and guy that changes the oil would be one and the same in this case.
