Cleaning a K&N
My K&N open element air cleaner is starting to get pretty dirty. I live on and drive down dirt roads all the time, so it sucks up a lot of dust. I don't want to pay $10 for a "recharge kit" (yeah, i'm cheap ), so what solvent can i use to clean it besides their air cleaner solvent, and what oil can i use to oil it before installation? I dont want to screw up my $35 filter. I was thinking carb cleaner for the solvent, but would that be too harsh on the filter?

Buy the recharge kit. the oil has to be tacky to trap the dust, if you use something other that air filter oil, the filter won't work much at all. You could get oil that would work at a bike shop, since a lot of bikes use similar filters. if I wasn't using the recharge kit I would use Castrol super clean to clean the filter. I've seen too many filters destroyed by solvents. in other words, just get the kit, it's easier.

I agree with '72. Save yourself the trouble, time, money and a new filter. Buy the recharge kit, it is worth it, plus you can service a few air filters with the kit. Using solvents or even hot water will destroy the element. And NEVER use compressed air to dry it. Just let it sit out in the sun for an hour or 2. Good luck!
