Can someone explain to me why load range D & E rated tires are so loose when they're new, and then firm up a few miles down the road? What exactly is going on inside the tire? Can you break them in wrong?

hey blu......i have never heard of "break in" for tires......hope someone can help you out with this because this now has my curiosity up.

That's new to me also, I think who ever told you that would try to sell you blinker fluid too.

I think there is some mold release that may be what makes them feel slicker when new. I think you scrub this off pretty quick.

It's a looseness in the sidewalls, I've felt it myself. It makes the truck pretty tough to keep between the stripes, because the sidewalls haven't stiffened up yet. They'll firm up within a thousand miles or so. It seems to be only a factor in load range D & E tires, of course the taller ones are more prone to it (I run 235/85/16). It's pretty much common knowledge among my friends who run HD tires. We were discussing it the other day and I thought of a great place to ask this question: HERE! So what's going on inside the tire? Thanks.

ahhh...blinker fluid...that actually works...me and another guy put up a sign that said 1000 blinks for a 99 cents at trak auto and actually had people ask...

My engine reaches peak torque at or around 4000 RPM. Ive found that if I reach its peak torque range and then immediately release the clutch while keeping my foot on the gas I shorten the tire break in period considerably. I try this trick every few days to assist in my tire break in . This ensures a proper tire rotation every year and a half or so ...with new tires no less.

LOL I guess "loose" means different things to different people. I'm talking sidewall stiffness here. Any HD tires owners out there?

are you sure you arent just "baking the treads" too much maybe slow down around those corners too! I have felt that too with the widetrack radial baja's on my 77 silverado

I can assure you that isn't the problem.
