please help me value this 66 short stepper

hey guys,
first post. looking at this 66 step side that is local to me. drove the truck, seems to be strong, mechanicals seem sorted...steering is a little vague (turn wheel several inches to get response at the tires, thinking ball joints, tie rod etc. is worn possibly?) has had cab corners welded in and some floor repair. over all its not bad. the stickers and look is bad but i can fix that. turn signals and wipers are in-op. i'll copy and paste the ad details and a few pics if i can figure them out. i'm going to go back and take a second look at it tonight or tomorrow. anything specific to check out for the work that's been done and the $ hes asking? **for clarification it has tubular control arms and a 2 or 2.5 drop spindle on it.** i'd like to put air on the truck using possibly this thread/vendor's kit: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=575686 i'd use the truck as a home depot getter and just as a truck. i have several vehicles and it will not be a DD.

thanks guys!

Re: please help me value this 66 short stepper

I'd knock off a hundred for every silly sticker on it to start with! Haha...makes you wonder what the stickers are covering
The grille appears to be from a 60-61? It looks to be a collection of parts BUT if it's solid and you want a runaround truck it's probably good. I would check the VIN in the door jamb and verify what it's supposed to be.

And I'd think it's more like $5k but I'm no expert and trying to sell my own overpriced 66!

Also don't believe the tail lights are original either? Someone more familiar with stepsides can comment

lol my thoughts exactly on the stickers...thanks for the fast response. i thought the same with the stickers, they are not hiding anything that i can see except for the one over the spare tire carrier. that one is covering the carrier hole. not a big deal there. does the price seem in line for the mechanicals i guess that is my biggest question. body is definitely not rotten...something mechanically sorted is more attractive to me right now as i'd like to use it right now. i have a cj5 project i'm messing with thats chewing up time. i'd like to ls swap the truck this winter possibly...just unsure of sbc value in this style body with the work that's been done.

thanks

Re: please help me value this 66 short stepper

Price really depends on what you want to pay. There are a lot on non-original parts (taillights, drivetrain, diamond plate on kick panels) and a few missing parts (i.e. bumper, rear brackets) not to mention the broke stuff you mentioned. . It'd go for $2500-$4000 in my neck of the woods as it sits. There has been a lot of time and money spent on it, but you can't expect to pay for that as a consumer. I wouldn't spend more than around $4k personally and that's if the body is solid and mostly due to the newer drivetrain.

Also appears to be a highly modified clutch pedal....I'd do some looking into that.

Well I count 36 give or take a few stickers on it and we do not know how many on the other side and under the truck. LOL I would deducted $25 off price per sticker and $50 for the large ones! Just my opinion the stickers kill the look of that truck. Did you check brake pads to see if any stickers on them? hahaa

Re: please help me value this 66 short stepper

Took a second look...
I'm thinking the drivetrain is worth maybe 750.00?
Sadly doesn't matter what the PO spent to build the motor, Trans, etc.. It's nothing special it appears.

As far as the truck, if it's all solid and the suspension is good, brakes, etc then the body is probably worth $2k considering that it isn't a candidate for a proper restore without changing a lot of parts to correct years.

All in its still probably a decent deal at $3k. As said before, the $2786.47 worth of stickers don't count.

Where I am at it is about a $4500 truck. I would look at it real good to see what is wrong with the steering and take a close look at how well the work that has been done was done. I have seen a lot of hack jobs over the years.

Re: please help me value this 66 short stepper

I have seen a lot of trucks in far worse shape and not short beds advertised for far more around here (Dallas), I would do as PGSigns said and look it over good, take a magnet too. I would look at what you dont like and be honest ( dont bash it either), just make comments to yourself and figure what its going to cost you to redo those items. Then make an offer, worse thing they can say is no. Dont spend a lot of time on those stickers unless they are hiding something, cosmetics can be easily changed, look at the meat of the truck!

Good luck!

Re: please help me value this 66 short stepper

The engine may not be anything special but the Tremec 5 speed should be nice. That trans alone, new is ~$2500. I agree on taking a close look at the steering. Someone may have done a hack job at a power steering upgrade that will need to be corrected. It looks like the heater isn't hooked up. I don't know if that is a concern to you, but if it is, I would figure on a new heater core at a minimum.

I would think $5K would be more in line, assuming the drivetrain is low miles.

Re: please help me value this 66 short stepper

Just a quick thought; TKO-500/600 is a fantastic high-dollar trans. So... why is it in this truck? Tremec also made T-5's, and I'd guess that's what's in this truck. Notice he doesn't mention it being a TKO.

I'll also second that the clutch/brake pedals both look weird, and the clutch has that really strange bend in it. I'd guess they both aren't even for the truck, considering the size also seems off. (Aren't they a little small?)

Re: please help me value this 66 short stepper

i paid $2500 for a mostly complete truck in 98' when no one cared about 60-66. well now many yrs later i see prices skyrocket for "what i have in it" price id rather pay $5000 for a untouched rusty yet daily driver as i can customize it. it may look and sound good but once u get into and want to change things it may cost much more then the asking price. just saying cuz its old dont make it a classic!!!!
