New project, Christmas gift to myself.

After searching for a few months, I finally pulled the trigger and bought a truck. 1971 lwb c10 Cheyenne, 350 engine, 350 trans, factory air, power steering and brakes. The truck is in great shape and the PO told me even the paint was original.
The bed is solid, no rot that I could find. But there is some rust starting to show from under the trim moldings. The only thing that bothers me is the cover that's on it, and the snap rings screwed into the bed. It's in good condition, I just rather see the body lines on the bed rails.
The frame has minor surface rust here and there, but nothing that looks like scale or rot.
The cab needs both rockers, some minor cab corner work, 1 floor support bracket, a small spot near the brake booster, and some work around one of the lower tabs that holds the bottom of the front fender on.
One of the doors is solid, the other has a small corner starting to rot, and the bottom has a few small holes.
Both front fenders need the bottom sections near the cab replaced and both inner fenders look to be ok. Even the radiator support has only minor surface rust showing.
The hood has rot on the front, which I found odd. The PO gave me another hood with the truck that is rot free, so one less item to replace.
Everything except the AC works. The PO told me over this last summer, the AC worked, but I couldn't get the compressor to kick on? Or am I wrong in guessing it works like a newer AC compressor?
The 350 was replaced about 5 years ago with a GM Goodwrench engine and runs awesome. 350 transmission also shifts nice and has nice clean looking red fluid. The truck drives great and goes down the road better than the 06 ford (puke) that I'm driving at the moment.

My plan is for a frame off restoration, but I'll probably drive it for a while first and just do little things to it, as it looks presentable as is. I'm thinking first up, some Rally Sport wheels, center caps and trim rings. Also, I don't like the rear step bumper, I'll probably buy a chrome bumper and the new brackets.

I'll try and get some pics up.
Thanks for looking

Re: New project, Christmas gift to myself.

From your description, it sounds almost identical to my 72 Cheyenne. Same color, drive train and options. Mine has black door panels and seat. The A/C does not work in mine. The cab corners and rockers are in need of some work also. Great find and enjoy that Christmas gift to yourself. Is it an original RI truck? I like your plan which is the same as mine, drive it for a while and do little things to improve it.

Re: New project, Christmas gift to myself.

Looks like a great start with a CLEAN interior. I share your sentiments on those bed covers, they just ruin it for me. Especially if there are snaps through the sheet metal.

Looks like Santa is bringing you a new outbuilding too! Hopefully I'll have one of those in the next few years too.

Very nice Christmas present. It looks to very original and solid, the best way to find them. I actually had one the same color (original paint) with saddle interior.

Nice truck and a nice Alarm system too

Very nice. Looks like a good candidate for selective restoration as you continue to drive it most of the time.

Very similar, only 3 differences according to the vin plate, no tilt, coil springs, and white seats in mine.
Great looking truck you have there.
The truck was from Virginia for the first 30 years, then sold to someone in Mass. I bought it from a guy in Mass as well, but he only had the truck for a year. I'm the 4th owner. All the past Bill of sales were in the glovebox

Given your location, that looks to be an incredibly nice truck!

A little shocker when I went to the DMV to get my Antique plates, I had to pay sales tax on the the NADA value, $11,375.00...which was well over double what I paid for the truck!

Trying to figure how I want to go about the restoration at this point. My garage is not complete yet, so I have no heat and power in there. I'm thinking in the spring, start with pulling the bed off first, sand blast the underside and stop all the surface rust. Then do the same 1 body part at a time, more to control and stop the rust. Hopefully gather as many parts as I can over the summer, and next winter do the full frame off restoration.
I already scored a tilt steering column from ebay, now I need to find an OE style am/fm radio to make it more enjoyable to drive.

I've been looking at tons of pictures on this site, and a google image search of 71/72 trucks to try and decided a color to paint it. I like the Butterscotch/white 2-tone like it is now, but I also like the Medium Green/white 2-tone. I'm leaning towards the original colors only because the interior is in such nice condition and it'll save a lot of time not changing it.

I hear ya on the DMV,they want there hands in your pockets like everyone else,I traded straight up before no money whatsoever exchanged, but it wasn't good enough for them, they had to have something out of the deal too.

Very nice truck! I love the originality of it. That's crazy about the DMV stuff. We don't have anything like that here.

Re: New project, Christmas gift to myself.

wow, that DMV is crazy.

i bought a 10 year historical vehicle plates for $25? and paid 6% sales tax, BTY the price i paid for the truck and the price i told the state i paid were different amounts.

over the 40 years of the trucks life i wounder how many times it paid sales tax?

I would check into that, that seems in absolutely no way legal to me. Sales tax is based on the price of the sale, not made up numbers.

That's one good thing about SC. You pay $60,000 or $600 for a car, you pay a % on the sales price... up to a MAXIMUM of $300! However, we do pay a yearly property tax on cars which sucks, but if you own old stuff it's only $50/yr or so.

Wow, so I looked it up... you gotta be fricken' kidding me!

http://www.dmv.ri.gov/registrations/tax/index.php

Vehicles 30 Years and Older
Dealer: Sales tax is 7% of the purchase price
Private Party: Sales tax is 7% of Nada Clean Retail book value or purchase price, whichever is greater.

So a dealer can pay 3K for a vehicle, pay 7%, you pay, say, 5K for it, but NADA says it's worth 12K and you have to pay tax on 12K? Wow, I know what state I'm never moving to...

...So I couldn't help myself... for giggles I looked up a 67 Camaro (I figured they'd be high). Lets say you bought a decent project car for 5K, not too uncommon... acording to RI DMV you would have to pay tax on 23K. Wow. That should be illegal.

Yeah, I heard through the grape vine that the dmv (gov't) is starting this crap up, I heard Ga's dmv is doing something similar to this as well (dont know about anywhere else) I think it's total B.S. Your already taxed to death as it is now, and then they decide to tax someone over a used vehicle like this is totally ridiculous!
